Hi all,

my wife has developed a real phobia or fear of flying and wondered if anyone could recommend a course that she could go on to help her?

Many thanks in advance,

KM

What is it about flying that scares her? Is it the feeling of being trapped when they close the doors, or has she read too many news reports with the word "plummet" in them?

Mate

This website is great for calming down nervous travellers.
It has helped me over the years.

Good luck!

"What is it about flying that scares her?"

Could be:

1) Being sealed in a flimsy metal cylinder with 100+ strangers?
2) Sitting on top of tonnes of highly inflammable kerosene?
3) Being 6 or 7 kms above the ground?
4) Being hurtled into an environment where your life expectance can be measured in seconds without the appropriate life support systems?
5) Screaming along at 700 km/hr?
6) All of the above?

Nah, hard to see anything scary about that!

My wife did the Qantas course 3 years ago and has since then flown to the UK twice - unattended.
There must be a weakness in the course because she still wont come with me in my Warrior.

Some people that are afraid to fly go and take flying lessons to tackle the problem head on. Why not suggest her to go and get a GFPT or PPL. She will understand how it all works then ;)

QSK? Maybe you should challenge her to get her pilots licence?

Yeah, tried that approach and the look on her face told me that a pig would fly before she stepped into any light aircraft, and I normally fly twins!

Lets face it, Gravity sucks, you just gotta beat it!!!
Just take the 'scared' party on an aerobatic flight, scare the living crap out of them, and with any luck then they'll find every normal flight after that a walk in the park.....maybe!!

Understand your wife's reaction, but I can personally recommend the "learn to fly" option. It takes time and perseverance, but by heck it sure works. I have now gone from the need to get totally legless (if not getting cold feet and cancelling) before a flight to comfortably flying to Europe (not under my own steam!) on an annual basis.
Oh and she'll help add to the number of us female pilots, which is never a bad thing... :p

maybe its more fear of not being in control rather than flying. So VictorBravo's suggestion makes sense, if you know how to control a plane there is no need to be afraid. Often fears are born out of things we do not understand or have no control over. Coming from a family of flying nuts I admit that the fear to me is hard to understand, however I think patience and time is the key. Baby steps.
