Ex service Flt Ops officer??

Hey guys what is life like in civvie street.
I am going into the RAF as the above. what level can i expect to come in as say after three years service? What is the money like for an experienced Ops manager? I would also have completed a Msc in Airline management so guys 60K??

Haven't come across anyone who has come out of the RAF after 3 years and walked straight into an Ops Manager's job !!!!!
I am not sure how 3 years experience in the RAF, would make you an 'experienced ops manager' ????

Ok groover, 60K was a bit ambitious..but with the Msc and three solid years of experience with different ac and crews cmon that must be worth something. So what will i really be worth and would i get an immediate job or not with the big boys ofcourse

OK, this debate is becoming a tad more sensible.

JJ it really depends what you want to do.

Most of the big players have graduate entry programs where you get a taste of many Airline diciplines, the competition for these places is fierce, and on most there is an entry age limit, i have to say i am not 100% on salary, but wouldnt think it would be much more than 25K for starters.

If you are going down the route of going into an Ops Department of a big player in 3 years time, then I think most will agree that you have to start fairly near to the bottom, there are no shortage of graduates about in many ops departments, and staff with many, many years experience ahead of you in the pecking order, again 25K would be a reasonable figure to aim for as a Controller. Management would be a long way down the line.

There is of course the Option of going into a smaller carrier where progression may be quicker, and the money here in Management is getting better all the time.

I am sure you will by no means struggle to get a job, but from first hand experience i think your MSc is better suited to the first or third option, not the second, or with your expectations you will be sorely disapointed. Unfortunately the RAF will not teach you what a lot of Ops Managers have many, many years of experience in, that is reality.

In the Ops environment often experience and raw talent for what is a very specialist role will come before a degree, but then that solely depends on the individual.
I think what it also boils down to, is that don't expect the degree to give you any benefit over someone, with say 3 years Civil ops experience when you too are 3 years down the line with NO civilian experience.

Jet Jones .... I have an MSc and nearly 3 years experience in OPs, plus another 2 years with in passenger handling...

I aim for an OPs manager position, but everything needs 10 years experience.... so need to play the waiting game.....

It appears that the MSc could be hinderence for OPS... cos they are concerned with experience b4 qualications.

BTW where are you doing your MSc?

Boy - are you living in cloud cuckoo land! Your 3 years in the RAF will only give you marketable experience if you end up at Brize or Lyneham. Anywhere else and the similarities between military and civil will be like chalk and cheese. There's a big difference between re-roling a fast jet for a different sortie (you either have one or you don't - end of story) and trying to replace a U/S airliner with another from the other end of the country, and get a crew together for it.

Bear in mind your 3 years will only be 2 after training - is it really worth it to join in the first place? I think you really need to have a long hard think about your career decisions now, before you sign on the dotted line ;)

As for your 60K - if flight ops pay was that good I wouldn't be an ATCO.

JJ, Msc and 3 years won't make up anything in these days. Especially with the big boys, they got more then enough people lining up for the job. And on top of than if you don't have a management experience you won't get anywhere near that, even with the Msc. (Sorry, not a disrespect, but is the fact). Depand what you are after and where, usually you will get from 20-23K to start with. With your experience if anyone offer you a job as an ops mgr, you really got to watch it!!
The reason to say that is we used to have a guy working for us with a raf background and we have to train him up as fresh. ;)
But anyway go luck with your search for 60K..
