Flight Ops Wannabe

Hi, I currently work for an engineering consultants writing reports and would very much like to work in flight ops.

Can anyone tell me what it is like, hours, pay, training etc. And how to get a foot in the industry.

Depends on what exactly it is that you want to do.....

As you can see from these forums, many different positions, dealing with different aspects of aviation.

If you can be a little more specific, then I'm sure we can offer some info/advice

Go over to the USA and do a Flight Despatchers Course.You will learn alot,and its a good way to get a foot in the door.

AOG007 I'm not sure exactly which area, I was hoping to get a range of replies from different people. I am still at the very early stages of thinking about this.

Flying Mechanic - Can you recommend any particular courses, schools. Do you know how long they take and what sort of costs (I am still repaying loans from my MEng in Avionic Systems)

The fisrt question I have to ask is why do you want to work in Operations when you have just took out a loan to train as an Avionics Eng surly you could make a few quid more doing that. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
Second question where do you want to work North, South......

AirOpsOne - used to work for GKN(as Westland Helicopters) but these days I can't seem to find anything in systems that is non military! I could go into maintenance I guess, but I know less about that than I do about flight Ops!

I'm hoping to find something in the Midlands (east rather than west) but willing to relocate just not south as it's too expensive!

I am a just out of trsining pilot and one of the lucky few who got a sponsorship, with the current climate however I have been on hold. The company put me on work experience in ops during my training (between exams and flight training) and events transpired that I ended up working in ops full time until such a time as a course comes up.

What I mean to say is that I joined the ops team with no ops experience (but more than a passing interest in the aviation industry) and have managed to pick up all I need through on the job training. There are training courses in the UK also such as UKOMA (UK Ops Managers Association) which cover all facets of ops from crewing to flight planning and the like.

From the avionics maintenance point of view christ if our engineers can do it them surely you can, especially if you have worked in the development area first (you probably trained on the crap most airlines are still using today)

Hope it all works out and bear in mind that the south coast isn't as horribly expensive as you think and there are more jobs down here in BOH/SOU anf the london airports.
