I am doing some research on the Far East and was wondering if anyone had any idea of the number of expat pilots working in Indonesia?:)

Currently Zero on Part121 Ops on an Employment Contractual basis.
The government is said to be relaxing these restrictions due to the pilot shortage but it appears that the final details are still being worked on.

Currently, missionaries in Papua, several in East Kalimantan, for missionary and specialists work. Then there's a couple in other Part 135 Ops, but overall, only a handful.

What shortage? A lot of Indon Pilots are flying with MAS and MasWings here in Malaysia. If there r shortage in their own country, why would they need to go overseas?

Pay peanuts for countrymen but pay more than double for outsider. Smart move. Almost like MAS.

why would they need to go overseas? just ask MH pilots working at Etihad, Emirates or Korean Air, they will give the correct answer :ugh:

MAS pay is bad except if you hold foreign passport. Management is lousy. Sell asset to make money. Plane is old. Hard to get promotion (WideBody copilot now have between 7K to 10K hours and still cant get command, I'm lucky to get my command). Well life suck here in MAS, but most of us have no balls to go outside.

There are a few reasons why they don't go back...
1. They got enemies back home they want to avoid
2. They probably already moved their families to Malaysia and the wife doesn't want to go back to Indo
3. They enjoy where they are...
4. Maybe the pay here isn't enough.

The shortage is of multiple factors...
1. Salaries aren't high enough, despite them rising all the time.
2. The "global/regional shortage" is attracting huge incomes outside Indonesia...
3. There aren't enough flying schools to cater for the demand
4. The flying schools are too expensive
5. The airlines are putting hideously punitive bond conditions to try and prevent them from leaving, and this discourages people from going back.

And the guys at MASwings, if they want to go back, need to get into a punitive bond to get jetrated... The guys at MAS aren't going back yet... if they're like the other guys at other airlines, they're adopting a "wait and see" stance.

Lion Air can't take more 739ERs coz they haven't got enough crew for them.

Airlines are reluctant to increase salaries, a 737 Captain's salary is already the equivalent of a medium enterprise CEO, if not more.

Someone's gotta give in the salary squeeze... it'll be the airlines... and even then, there'll be a shortage unless someone wants to pay a 737 captain the intl rate of a widebody captain! *Which will result in a looooong wait!*

A lot of Indon Pilots are flying with MAS and MasWings here in Malaysia. If there r shortage in their own country, why would they need to go overseas?

maybe they like you lah. Don't want to move up to bigger planes, so they stay in prop at Maswing but have 1 difference.

They got balls to go out and get more money. The ones that stay in Indo not complain like you and know if want more money then go upgrade.

After MASwing, they go somewhere else if better pay. Even Europe looking for some of them.

Just wanting to know if Maswings would take pilots from Australia as direct entry on to the ATR 72's with 1345 TT inclusive 900hrs metro 23 and Saab 340 airline time also 10 yrs as licensed aircraft engineer

MASWing is in Malaysia, not Indonesia.

As far as, what i konw they are not taking any Expat...But i could be wrong..

Fuel Nozzle, MASWings placed an add in the West Australian (newspaper) about 3 years ago, probably to try and entice Skywest F50 Captains that way (when they had the F50s). Things may have changed since then, though, especially with the GFC and so on, but you never know. Anyway, good luck and let us know how you go.

Express Air (737/Dornier 328) employs foreigners. Mandala do also but as far as I know they are only TRI/TRE. There are a number of foreigners flying Part 91/135 ops also. No more than 100 I would imagine with the bulk of those working for one company. Thats not including Missionary pilots (MAF/AMA/Yujasi etc).

Lion Air supposedly have received permission from DGCA to employ foreigners as they are struggling to crew their steady stream of 737-900ER's. There was discussion on here about the kind of contracts that were on offer. Also they really need to pick up their act... shades of Adam Air.
