I switched off all Windows Updates a long time ago. My system has been a lot more stable since then.

That is SUCH a silly response. You can't possibly imagine that you've sussed out the solution to MS updates.

When I bought my current XP SP2 computer, one of my first actions before going online was to turn off updates.

Depends on whether your laptop spends all its time begin NAT and/or a firewall, or if it ever gets exposed to the naked Internet.
