This means that BA "de facto" becomes 100% self handling doesn't it? I don't understand what pushed BA to give a termination notice to its One World partner. BA will go on providing passenger handling I THINK until Qantas moves to Terminal 3.

Qantas Signs Aviance at Heathrow
Aviance Heathrow is proud to announce the award of the Qantas Ramp Handling contract.
The award of Qantas adds to our growing portfolio of quality national carriers at Heathrow
This contract will take effect from Winter Schedule on 28th October 2007 and will advance our move into Terminal Four.
This award also includes the provision of De-Icing services for the airline.
Discussions and formal negotiations have been in progress for approximately 12 months.
In June 2007, Qantas went out to formal global tender at 22 stations around the world. Aviance UK entered the tender process in association with its US partner ATS who entered the process bidding for Vancouver, British Columbia.
The process for Heathrow was accelerated when Qantas received a termination notice from British Airways which takes effect from 28 October.
Competition for the business was extremely fierce with four other companies “in the hunt”. This was due to the opportunity to “Fast Track” progress into T4. Originally, five companies were competing, which was quickly shortlisted down to Two.
The tender process also includes the potential award of the Full handling contract when Qantas moves its operations to Terminal Three in October 2008. At this time, Qantas will introduce their own DCS system and will be another operator of the Airbus A380 aircraft.
Qantas operates Four daily services to Australia utilising Boeing 747-400 aircraft. Flights operate through Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok in close conjunction with British Airways in what is called a JSA, Joint Sevices Agreement..
As previously stated, Qantas will introduce Airbus A380 services to London in 2008 and aviance’ capability of handling this aircraft helped influence the airline decision.
We will be the launch handler at LHR for the A380 when Singapore introduces it into service on their London route in January 2008.
Gary Greenwood, Aviance Commercial Manager at Heathrow, was quoted as saying “ This is terrific news for all of us in LHR. The award of Qantas is a testimony to the hard work by all of our staff to provide the highest levels of service to our customers. We are thrilled that Qantas has decided to entrust its future development at LHR to Aviance”
Keith Nicholls, Aviance Commercial Director commented “ This is an extremely important award for us at LHR. It confirms our position as the largest independent ground handler at this station. It is also important for the Alliance as it raises our profile in Australasia.”
