JAA Class 2 Renewal

My UK issued JAA Class 2 medical expired three years ago, and due to various reasons I have not flown during that time. I was learning towards a PPL(A).

Do I need to undergo the full Class 2 again? - In which case I will go for my Class 1, or can I still renew that medical?

Cannot remember whether it is renew or revalidate; what matters is that it is not an intial.
