Hey all,

Im chasing some advice which route to take. I qualify for the QANTAS SO position now and have spoken to recruitment there which was very positive, im currently in GA flying multis and only about 5-6 months away from racking up my 500 multi and therefore qualify for VB/J* (probably a preference to VB just because i have more contacts there than in J* to help make up for my lack of turbine time). I would really appreciate some advice from guys who have been down each path. The money looks appealing in QF but i can see myself going nuts sitting in the back of a plane for 4-5 years! I also am considering heading Overseas in 5 or so years so if i went that route which would set me up better? Any advice would be most appreciated. (oh and completely understand in no way im i assured of getting either of these jobs anyway so this is quite hyperthetical)

well qantas is the sort of company which you can pull a "career" from, for example if you did manage to land the SO position then you could see that as your foot in the door and stick in there, eventually upgrading to FO and maybe eventually your command.

as for VB or J*, less money for sure however maybe more fun - more flying that is. Maybe a few years in VB or J* will see you with enough experience to apply for a direct entry FO in qantas?

G'day SingleDriver,

If you're thinking of trying your luck overseas in the future you'll have a much better chance as an F/O or Captain, and traditionally you'll get both of those far sooner with VB or J* than with QANTAS. There's every likelihood you'd get your command with these two before you got an F/O slot with QANTAS, however all the airlines have ordered a sh!tload of new aircraft so it's a bit hard to say what's going to happen.

Bottom line, a window seat is a lot more fun that being a backseat driver.

QANTAS has never had, and doesn't at the moment have, direct entry F/Os, and the salary difference between Q and VB is slowly diminishing.

Regards,
BH.
