Prop Injury at Amsterdam Schiphol

A Martinair technician was hit by the moving propeller of a KLM Cityhopper Fokker 50 this morning (May 11th) at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The flight was on its way to Malmo, but passengers were offloaded and the technician was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

Just found out that he had sugery and that he is stabil ( do you say like this?) now.

When I was a kid, about 12 or so, at the airport I used to hang out at, I saw a guy who had just jump started a Bonanza with a battery cart, walk into the prop. I screamed as loud as I could as saw what he was doing, but with the engine running, he could not hear me. He lived through it, but was never the same. I'll never forget it.

Having worked around props for 20 odd years they still scare the crap out of me !,particularly since an occaision were a colleague probably saved my life by preventing me walking to a prop that was just about to turn !.
My thoughts are with the mechanic.

Agree with u all. Never liked those prop things. Fortunately I don't have to go close to any while they are turning. Don't think I would want to. Sympathy to the mechanic and his family. Lets all pray for a good recovery.

Like all the rest of us, I do hope the technician over at Schipol can make a full recovery from the prop accident

Without wishing to sound a boring old so and so, but can many of us remember back to hand swinging props. I used to do this with our gliding club `tiger` many moons ago, I think I was all of 17 then. So very easy to come unstuck and all my sympathy to the very unfortunate Dutch engineer.

A short time after I left school I was attached to the RNZAF for a period trying without much success to fly the harvard. One afternoon, I remember a groundcrew lad just walking past a couple of aircraft. All he did was just pat the prop of one harvard as he passed and all that happened was a short cough and just a couple of prop revolutions. The lad was fully okay, but I learned a lot from that incident, things like hot `mags` etc.
Do hope again the engineer recovers well.

Horrible to say but I do have a recollection that GF back in the early 70's had a impatient pax killed when he exited the a/c in Bahrain, to collect a bag from the forward hold of the F27 he walked under the wing straight into a still rotating l/h prop and was killed.

One of those tragedies that hopefully can be avoided by having the cabin crew and the ground staff co-ordinate and makng sure that no-body wanders off the direct path to the treminal!!

Was it / is it common practice to plane/deplane with the engine running? Sounds like a formula for disaster.
