Emirates currently flies 18 frequencies per week to South Africa, a further 38 frequencies per week have been granted. These will be phased in over a period of time and will also include Cape Town and Durban.

I wonder which government officials have benifited from this little deal.

Is bilateral agreements different for Dubai and Abu Dhabi, they're still in the same country (UAE)?
But, hey if Emirates think they can do it, then let them, no more waiting for SA airlines to fill the gap. They might just become the national carrier of South Africa, and fly 56 times weekly with A380s!!!

Each of the Emirates controls its own traffic rights through its own CAA all of whom are subserviant to GCAA in terms of operating standards etc

I can bet Emirates will launch Dubai-Cape Town soon.

Its already planned for 2008, everything is in place, just waiting for more aircraft and pilots and then it will open! I think its behind DBX-GRU on the list!

Hi EvanB,

Where are you getting your information from? Are you in management?

Management ... sort of, but not really! It was publically discussed in their application for the extra rights they got to DBX-JNB this year! They intend to go from 18x to 21x per week on DBX-JNB next year and add DBX-CPT! The DBX-GRU will be a 777-200 LR route!
