Does anyone have a sound file of a TSR-2 or even perhaps a Javelin.
I had one once upon a time of a mass Javelin flypast at Seletar I think but it got lost in a confuser crash.

Got a Jav wav (did you see what I did there eh?) not sure how to host a wav on here though. Can Email it to you David, if you PM me your address?

In a similar vein, I lost a marvelous wav file of a Spit doing a couple of low passes, with no airshow commentary etc. It was "given" to me by someone on Prune a few years back anybody got it, know of it?

(Doing a google on spitfire .wav gets numerous hits on an audio company who produce wavs and some sort of amplifier called a Spitfire).:{

Here's Gainesy's Javelin audio clip:

Link deleted - try post 15 below...

I've uploaded it to my BT Internet briefcase, then tried the Tiny URL site to bring the link length down - works a treat! Learned a lot today (including how good Javelins sound!), now if I can remember it all!

Many years ago I was lucky enough to be listening when the BBC played a sound archive of a nightingale's song during which the first 1000 bomber raid passed over. The sound of all those Merlins (and Bristol Hercules, Pegasus and even P & W possibly) was something else again, and the recording quite moving. I've never heard it again, although it is mentioned in a couple of other web sites. Any one out there know where/if it is available. VMT

The album "Nightingales and Bombers" by Manfred Mann's Earth Band features almost exactly that, only I believe the bombers in question were supposed to have been Luftwaffe! Recording was made near Reigate.

Tredders,
Getting "can't find the server at bcvrf.yahoo.com" on your last link.

Dammit, neither can I - have fiddled with it...

Nightingales and Bombers... (http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=1132149578034311052&hl=en-GB)

Javelin flypast... (http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=5264074137659226647&hl=en-GB)

Any better for you chaps...?

As for the sounds of nostalgia: Out on a bike ride over Surrey Hills yesterday evening, accompanied by the merry puttering of a Tiger Moth out for a bimble from Redhill. Super, they were taking their time with some left and right orbits....

Tonight, walking across the very lovely Riddlesdown (local common, useful for satellite spotting) when the unmistakable sound of a Merlin tickled my ears. Ah, a Mustang heading westwards, a shiver down my back...

Thank you both for making these all too rare beautiful summer evenings a real treat!

Edited Monday - in case the originals still weren't working for everybody, I have now turned them into proper videos by adding a picture with Movie Maker - and moved them to Google Video. If this doesn't work I'm giving up IT...

Treaders,
Tried both & they're getting redirected/corrupted (at least in N. A.) to a unknown url/porn site. Perhaps a tiny url directed to the website you know is correct would do the trick?

I could not access the tinyurl links, but the ones in post #16 worked fine for me, thanks treaders.

I can also point people to a fine in-cockpit recording of a Vampire if anyone is interested?

Go to http://www.warbirds.no/multimedia.htm
Right click on the "Vampire på Flesland" and save the file to your computer. That way you wont waste your bandwidth when you wish to view it again. (30Mb wmv file)
Unfortunately they had a sound issue and the sound cuts out a few times, but its still a great clip. Interesting that if you change the language to English the clip is not available after translation? Oh well...
Enjoy!

Hmmmm, it's a guess - a Boomerang? Engine reminds me of the Wildcat...

Akubra
17th Sep 2007, 10:50
treadigraph, you are on the right track, but not the Boomerang which has a distinctive whistle to it. (Guess that why the Japanese called it the "Whistling Death")
The engine is close to the Wright R-1820, you could almost say a copy...
I fear I have given away too much! :)

Go on tell us all SVP

Akubra

Not the AN-2, I think the same engine but a monoplane.

Was at Wanaka NZ in 1998 when they were first publicly displayed.
5 in formation sounded really good.

They look great fun, if a little short-coupled! Saw a pair with the retractable biplane (I-26?) at Midland in 2000. Have to say my memories of that occasion was the bitter northerly wind, it was freezing - must have felt just like the Motherland to the Polys!

It looks to me that you people had the same bunch of Idiots running the show over there as we had with our much loved and fast Avro Arrow! It just validates my position "Politicians Have no Business in the Aero Industry!" Why we as a supposed free society always let the Monkeys run the Zoo is beyond me but what can one do?:ugh::ugh::ugh:

Except that the PM who cancelled the Arrow was Diefenbaker, from the oddly named and now defunct Progressive Conservative party.

Prob. the US pressurising the Canada govt. over soemthing or other, had some rather good attributes I believe.... did it ever fly?

which was the thing about the TSR-2 - had flown, well ahead enginewise and aerodynamically anything else at the time..

Oh yeah I watched them allright! Holy Cow,that is a Pretty Bird, must of took some Big Round Ones to fly it!

Not really, being from the Englsih Electric stable, like the Canberra and Lightning, Beamont always said it was just the next step up, like a big pussy cat, handled a dream straight out of the box, and just starting to open up the performance envelope when it was 'cut down in its prime'. Rock steady at low level in thick gusty air... and with that small but blown Delta wing, cold be flared beautifully like Concorde on landing.
