good afternoon

I was told that there is a new regulation that requires you to sit the exams at the CAA for the PPL license? Can anyone provide feedback on the difficulty of these exams? As i have mate who is looking at doing them?
What is the Nav like?
How many exams a day can you take?

The new PPL exams are now written online either at the CAA offices in midrand or at an accredited examinations centre (there are quite a few at various flying schools around the country). There are 5 subjects, namely:
i) Principles of Flight
II)Airframes and Engines
iii)Air navigation regulations (airlaw)
iv)Met
V)Nav
The examinations are a lot more difficult than they were, basically they are longer, more in depth and now are 4 choice multiple choice too! I invigilate the exams at our school, and I unfortunatly can't give you any example questions, but I can say that they are quite tricky with the wording.
Basically the problem is that there is no syllabus yet issued for these examinations, the syllabus on the website is the JAR syllabus which is the way the SACAA want to go eventually. So if you prepare sufficiently, I'd use AFE or the Trevor Thom sets, as personally I think that there are no ppl handbooks in SA yet that cover everything fully.
As far as the Nav exam, I've not invilated this subject yet, but the CAA I sent as Lamberts radio beacon plotting charts for them! These are charts used for the CPL and ATPL examinations! So I hope this is an error and thay don't bring in these charts in!

You can write 2 exams a day, but if you fail you must wait 72 hours before rewriting.
Hope this helps!!

Hi EladElap,
I have a Kenyan PPL and will be coming over to do my CPL at Lanseria.
I understand i first need to conver my KENYAN PPL into SA PPL and sit all the ground exams.

Where can i get past papers for the SA PPL exams?
Any other comments or suggestions.

Hi East African.

Unfortunately as the SA PPL exams have only been running for about 6weeks, there are no past exam papers that I am aware of that you could write that would be close to the new ones.

I'm sure the school you'll be attending will have plenty of old exam papers that you can practise one, but beware as these will probably be quite different both in content and format.

Best of luck!
