From the Sydney Morning Herald:
August 10, 2007 - 10:07AM
An Air Moorea aircraft crashed today on take-off from the French Polynesian island of Moorea bound for Tahiti, killing at least 12 people, an official source said in Tahiti.

Around 20 people were believed aboard the Twin Otter turboprop aircraft, which crashed into a lagoon.
The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
The island of Moorea is 17 kilometres from Tahiti.

Radio reports in French Polynesia said two members of a European Commission (EC) delegation may have been on the plane.

It is understood the two EC members recently met with French Polynesian President Gaston Tong Sang and were about to return to Europe.

As they always say here, one will not "know" the cause of the crash until the accident report is published. anything else is just conjecture.

According to witnesses, as far as I can ascertain from this French discussion forum (http://www.crash-aerien.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4523), the engines were either cut or they cut out before it hit the water.
