The "Bristow Ops Unst-Ninian Field 1977-1993" (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=285535&highlight=unst+ninian) thread got me thinking there must be loads of interesting photos out there which most of us have not seen. www.skyweaver.co.uk (http://www.skyweaver.co.uk) is an excellent place for BHL nostalgia but has not been updated for a while and Dave says it probobly never will be.

So if you have anything interesting you wish to share post it here. Please include photos of aircraft, people & places as well as anecdotes.

Here are some of mine to get us going:

FANTASTIC photos well done mate! whats up with the jazzy paint job on the norsk 61??

Tail-take-off

It was one of the first 2 aircraft to go to Norsk, an S61 and an AS332. The orange stripes were thought to be latest thing in Scandanavian design at the time. Funny enough they didn't last long & neither did the S61. It was back in Aberdeen about a year later!

Bristow’s photos! Great idea, which must add to the excellent Bristow web site. The one below, from the site, got my attention. Sumatra 72. I’d flown out to the Total rig site with Tony S that morning. He’d dropped me off and gone to haul fuel drums from the river. On his first return, and hover, the tail rotor drive let loose. There he was, 60 feet up, doing a rev per second. He crossed his fingers, closed his eyes, and dumped it - onto piled logs. Bits of MR blade flying everywhere and it was I then decided that my running towards it wasn’t too smart.

Anyway, the dust settled and out got Tony, broken wrist only. So there we were at a jungle site, 80 miles from base, and no comms at all. After a Pernod stiffener from the French rig crew I crawled into the wreck and ripped out the HF; the lot, racks, boxes and wiring, and sat the bits on top of a Caterpillar. A local guy climbed a tree and hung a long wire antenna. The Cat battery was connected and a few wires twisted together, those that flashed too much were ignored or disconnected, and a head-seat wired up.

Well I’ll be! Raised Djambi base at first call. I got the Ch Eng, on the line to tell him of the mishap. ‘Can’t be that bad’, he says, ‘if you’re talking on its HF’.

‘Only the HF is here. The other bits of the helicopter are between 50 and a 200 yards away’.

Can’t remember if it was Bravo Whisky or Bravo Vodka, one of the two.

Re VH-BHY. Why have the wheel sponsons (spelling?) changed. Is it to accommodate a liferaft or a fuel tank?

Hippolite
8th Aug 2007, 16:09
The larger sponsons are additional fuel tanks for long range ops. The aircraft is currently in Broome, Western Australia flying long sectors. Strangely enough, these sponsons add around 4 KIAS to the cruise speed of the 332L. The life rafts are not in the sponsons in the 332L, one is internal and the other is external on the co pilots side.

Forget - it was BW ! Quite exciting to have a tail rotor fail with a load of fuel drums in a net over a larger fuel dump underneath you and in a just cleared jungle site !! Very lucky to get out with two bust ribs - caused , I think, by some very enthusiastic French oil riggers pulling me out of the cockpit - God bless them !! I had two local Indonesian labourers in the cabin - they fled into the jungle and didn't come back for three days !! They shipped the Wessex 60 all the way back from the middle of Sumatra to Farnborough for a detailed investigation. For some reason, I was shipped off to Iran - Bristows moved in mysterious circles in those days !!

Did the Wessex do offshore flights?

David Eyre

Hi All,
My Dad (Peter Eyre) worked for Mayne-Bristow Helicopters, which later went back to being Bristow Helicopters Australia.
Mayne-Bristow had a base at Karratha, on the north-west coast of Western Australia. They had contracts flying to oil and LNG rigs off the coast, and contracts to fly marine pilots out to ships entering the nearby port of Dampier. They also operated a Britten-Norman Islander on behalf of West Australian Petroleum (WAPET), to Barrow Island.
Some of my photos of Mayne-Bristow JetRangers, Bell 212s, and SA-330J Pumas (and the WAPET Islander) are hosted on Airliners.Net, taken at Karratha, Western Australia in the 1980s:
http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?front=yes&s=1&keywords=mayne-bristow
I also have lots of Mayne-Bristow photos taken by my Dad, but I simply don't have time to scan them all at present.
Regards,
David Eyre

During a nice sailing trip with another Bristow pilot a few days ago....and while re-hashing old times....we dredged up a question from Iran days.

The question is why was a humourless Scot called the "Black Sardine"?

There must be a good story there as said dour fellow gets more than a bit miffed when reminded of the name.

It is the same fellow that when it was announced within the North Denes crewroom...."XXXX" fell off a roof and hurt himself....it was greeted with a shouted response...."Nothing minor I hope!"

Can any of the "Old Gang" enlighten us about the Black Sardine moniker?

Interesting medlee of pictures!

I did my 212 conversion in G-BBP.

Nice to see Grant Campbell has a beer in hand!

Poor old Girth Parsnip: definitely went before his time. I believe he was a frequenter of these forums (30N?) and was an all round character.

Ron Miles was a true gent, who I admired for his sustained enthusiasm and motivation for his profession, when many of his age were stuck in a rut they'd rather not be in. Sadly it seems he did not share the same for life, but who knows what demons he fought with?

Why is Frankie, from 'Frankie goes to Hollywood,' standing with Garth and Grant? (presumably with a brochette of caviar!!)

I must admit.....the only time I have seen him without a silk dicky (ascot...or whatever you lot call his signature neck garb) was in the posted piccy.

Great pics everyone; what a wonderful aircraft the 61 is. Many of the names you all mention were familiar to me although I'd moved across the road by then. The Craighaar and the Sumburgh Club seemed to blur the company differences between us all.

AB206 G-AWMK - Cliff Saffron and I accepted her from Cascina and delivered her to Redhill on 22 August 1968. I had 3 hours on type (with Fred le Grys) and didn't have a clue what was going on; luckily Cliff knew everything!
Somewhere I've got a rather yellow picture of what I did to 9Y-TCZ in Trinidad in 1969 (just before Carnival). Broke her back as well as my own, though I recovered and am still involved in aviation.

I flew the WX 60 offshore briefly with Dick Metcalf - what became of him?
Also the WS 55 Series 3 on floats including water landings into a Norfolk ditch with John Cameron.

Later in BAH I did water landings and rejects into the bay opposite the Sumburgh Hotel in G-BDKI. Presumably the engineers put a stop to this particular form of fun years ago.

Heliaviator nice pic of Ron, God rest him. The green cockpit is a Mil 26 if I remember right (I operated beside them in Zagreb); seems to be in tropical rig with fans. The Zagreb ones (and the small Antonovs) used to go back to Russia for major maintenance, stuffed with radios, tvs etc; when they came back they were stuffed with Georgian champagne, vodka, caviar etc. Our Russian colleagues are very resourceful indeed; luckily they were always generous enough to throw a party. I don't drink vodka anymore but have an Aeroflot tie and wings in compensation.

Compared to our fixed wing contemporaries in the airlines we've had interesting lives; wouldn't change one iota of it.

Best wishes all from Rupert Wilson.

Great photos and stories.

Got to say the green / blue cockpit shot is more likely a Tuploev Tu134, rather like the ones Bristow personnel would have occasionally used in and out of the Kazakhstan operation. I asked to visit the flight deck on my last trip home from there in March 2002, and was somewhat surprised to find not two, but FIVE flightdeck crew, including navigator in the glazed nose complete with handheld GPS unit! The little box above the central windscreen area was apparently the autopilot, which every ten seconds or so would give a pronounced kick in yaw........

Was supposed to have flown the then one and only S76 (G-BJFL) back to Redhill from Kazakhstan, but apparently the client was enjoying the aircraft so much alongside the pair of 212s, they extended her contract. Sadly, I had to be back on the day job in the UK..........

Great picture of Ron Miles, what a premature loss as 212man says.

I used to really enjoy flying with Ron on the 332L, he made for such a fun and easy cockpit. As Co-Pilot, on the way out to the ESB, one's most important job was ensuring that Ron was able to collect his daily packet of "biscuits" from the HLO shack. We had some great times and some great laughs, the "top of the box" daily ESB crossword competition was also a fond memory. Ron is one flying "mentor" I shall never forget.

Tail take off and Hel1aviator, well done for posting so many good and evocative photos :ok:

212 Man,

You're right; an interesting medley which reminds me of so many old times with Bristow. Poor Jerry Beecher who finally succumbed to skin cancer some years back, RIP. I remember meeting Garth when I was on exchange to the crabs many years ago and there was a story then that he had been flying an Alouette with a hydraulic failure, but being big and strong, had landed it successfully, albeit with a bent collective! It's probably apocryphal, but witn Garth's colourful character, who knows? He was a real gentleman, sadly missed.

I did my 212 conversion on G-BARJ with Mike 'British' Holcroft, another gentleman, then set out for Iran ferrying a brand new high-skid 212 VR-BGR.

It's good to see old and new friends again. I know where 'Windsock' is, but what happened to Simon 'Trainset' Hornby double-oh, Hox Maskins, Jonathan Huntly and 'Bex' Bissell carpet shampoomaster? Zingo is also a real gent and last time I met him, at Marignane, was exactly as he's always been, sounding just like Inspector Clouseau.

I'm presently converting what was my study into a nursery, having just become a dad, and I'm sorting many things which have lain unseen in deep drawers for many years. I've found a lot of old photos of my early time in Bristow, so I'll try and scan some of them to post here soon. Great thread :ok:

Bristow used to do servicing and modifications to Yugoslav police Bell 212s. I had a few comments from Gatwick controllers when doing ILSs into Gatwick with a YU callsign and a British accent:

We also did some main gearbox overhauls for Okanagan Helicopters. I delivered this one to Liverpool docks for shipment back to Canada:

Interesting shot of PK-HBV. Where was that taken? Certainly not Sumatra, its usual home. The aircraft was ex Brunei Air Wing. Note the very innovative position of the HF Antenna, under the tail boom, instead of flapping around sticking out of the front. I know the guy who did that very very well, and it worked a treat even stuck into jungle mud. The spacer was a hand carved teak wedge ordered with ‘approved’ drawings from a furniture shop in Jalan Kayu. :ok:

Sorry, just got back from a glamorous (not) two day trip. Thanks to Heliport for the help - I did follow the instructions - at least I thought I did, but it got to the point of not wishing to further embarass my self. As 212man insinuates, there is a certain amount of irreversible surgery which takes place when you lurch to the dark side - wait till he gets my age.

Thanks also to Taff for the 204 spot (miss Taff as well- does any one have a photo?) and anyone own up to owning a chopper in Trinidad?

I think the trouble is that Photobucket have changed the layout of their site since the instructions were written. What you need to do is look below the thumbnails in your albumn and click where it says the words "Direct link" (not the url itself) and it will automatically copy the url ready to paste into the insert image box on pprune.

If you have any more photos keep adding them here!

Thanks.

Jemy,

There have indeed been many variations on the good old yard of ale. I well remember a course of pilots from a Middle Eastern country doing their command training on the 212 who tried a yard of Guinness - very messy :} Pastis and tonic was my preference. It's a shame the Training School was closed down as so many good young men and women who passed through it have since done very well both in Bristow and other companies.

Ahh Mount Caroline. I remember it well. I think that I only landed facing in the direction shown in your photo Jemy. As I recall the prevailing wind generally dictated landing with the nose hanging over the escarpment. Not easy (for me anyway) with a howling gail blowing up the hill.

Jemy,
There was a time when the only landings on the Brent Spar at night were done by the 212s as its unusual motion and strange crane positioning could catch out pilots who didn't land there on a very regular basis, and even with the 212's there was a tail strike on the crane by Clanger L, a very experienced 212 pilot and TRE. We even used to shut down on there and I found the motion made me feel quite sick in a fairly short time.
Does anyone know what dear old Henry Boyt is doing now? His dog and mine (and occasionally Henry and I) used to share an office many years back when he was running the British Gas pipeline survey operation. Mike Ginn was also based there then.
I've been doing more clearing to prepare a nursery and have found some more old photos. I'll try and scan them if I have time over the wekend.

Sadly Malcolm Soper died from a stroke a few years ago, not long after he retired from BHL. He was my chief pilot in Aberdeen for much of my time there. A true gentleman of the kind you just don't get these days. As well as flying the line with him on many ocassions he once took me up for some aerobatics in his beloved chipmunk which he kept at Perth.

You are right, Malcom Soper was a true gent. His reading of the S61N checklist item "tail wheel lock" with the emphasis on the "h" in wheel will always be remembered fondly.

Speechless Two

I believe it was Russ Smith who lost the top of his cockpit in the late 70s. He used to tell the tails of that exploit when we used to fly from Unst in the early 80s. Another gent to fly with.

Just been having a browse through this thread and thought that some of you may be interested to see this.
It's ZH 814 owned and maintained by FBH, operated by the AAC in Brunei. In former lives it was in Bristow's colours and registered as (amongst others) VR-HGL, EP-HBU and G-BGMH. My collegues and I fly this and 2 others now (814 has 30,000 hrs+!) and I'm trying to have a print made featuring this one as it's our oldest. If anyone out there can provide any accurate history for it, it would be much appreciated. I've asked FBH themselves but they're obviously too busy to get back to me (probably trying to source another 212 since we lost one in Belize last month!)
Happy flying!

Bernouli's what?

ZH814 is also bristow's oldest 212 (infact oldest aircraft) although not the earliest one they ever had sn 30504 was abandoned in Iran following the revolution in 1979.

Built in 1971 your aircraft was utilised on many bristow operations around the world including Indonesia, Iran, UK, Nigeria, Trinidad and was also regitered in Bermuda as were all the Bristow overseas aircraft at one time.

It's departure from Iran following the revolution is an interesting story which can be found in the bristow book "Leading fron the front" (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41K6CZ1G09L._AA240_.jpg).

Army a/c in non-combat and training role, hence the cam paint scheme.

As for the day-glow orange....try finding a down-bird in the jungle or swamp without them.

Orange bits can be easily removed if required.

ZH814 may be the oldest 212 and 30000 hours is indeed a huge milestone for any helicopter but it is not the highest houred 212. 9Y-TEY has over 32000 hours as does G-BFER. Quite which component is the origional I'm not sure perhaps just the manufacturer's serial number plate.

G-TIGB is now with Bristow in Australia as VH-BWJ.
G-BMCX was flown to Luqa, Malta on 29 Aug 2007 (still in the old colours) and repainted by MedAvia into the new colours. It departed Malta on 14 Sep 2007, and flew to Antwerp (Belgium) and Den Helder (Netherlands) on 15 Sep 2007.
G-BMCX was then photographed at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia on a ferry flight (probably to Perth, WA) on 16 October 2007:

Hi All,

If anyone wants to check the type, current registration or past registrations of any helicopter, I can recommend the Rotorspot website. It has historic helicopter registers for almost all countries:
http://www.geocities.com/rotorspot/historic.htm

Regarding G-ANAL, it later became G-ANZL (wonder if it was reregistered because it was the butt of many jokes?!, and later written-off). Here's the entry from Rotorspot:

G-ANAL Westland-Sikorsky 51 Dragonfly Mk.1A (construction number WA/H/90) G-ANAL,G-ANZL · · · · · » [w/o]

As Chief Eng of G-APWN in 1978 I noticed that the paint scheme of the pax door didn't match the rest of the aircraft, around that time we lost a pax door over Reigate Hill, we had a few problems with loose doors and it wasn't until a student pilot mentioned that he had kicked the emergency door release with his right foot whilst trying to find the step that we realised we had found the problem. This would have occurred after the aircraft had been pre-flighted so the damaged safety wire would not have been found. G-APWN is now at Coventry.
I also had WN in Abu Dhabi in the early 70's, I did a test flight with Jerry Beecher RIP as we had had several computer faults, we took off and climbed to about 100 feet when the engine ran down Jerry, of course, immediately raised the collective but we were sinking fast, I was shouting go into manual (throttle) when suddenly the effect of raising the collective came in just before we were going to hit the ground rather hard and we fortunately landed softly. After looking at the actions taken in the past we changed the loom between the computer and the throttle actuator and solved all the previous intermittent problems. Jerry was a good friend, we hacked our way around the Abu Dhabi golf course for months. The greens were brown and the only grass was found in the bunkers. After playing the round, in the nineteenth hole, the Club supplied salt tablets with bottles of filtered water, we dutifully dissolved these tablets in a glass of water and drank them until we tasted the salt in the belief that we had replaced the salt that we had lost whilst playing in 120 degrees F. I have never found out if we were right?

It looks like new.

And there is a new fangled Wessex hovering in the background! You just have to love the good old days! :)

Bristow bought 6 ex-RN Whirlwinds in 1969 and converted them to WS55 Series 3 with the Gnome engine, initially the airframes were sent to Westland to have the new nose fitted to accomodate the Gnome engine. Bristow eventually bought the jigs from Westland and finished the project. I started the initial stripping of the 6 airframes and then took delivery of the converted airframes in Abu Dhabi a couple of years later.

And I ferried the last of those Series 3 Whirlwinds to Abu Dhabi with Jack Moss in Sept 73. But the writing was on the wall for the 55 by then as the hot new Bell 212's were arriving on the scene.

Was Jack wearing that same old tweed jacket?

Rosh,
Come now, it's not even in the same building as the C+ sim. You must have been on the same ghastly slot times as I was to be so disoriented! Did you manage to get a look at the 92 and Blackhawk sims (inside that is ;)) while you were there?

Taff,
Them there new fangled 212s didn't arrive in Nigeria for many years after 1973. We were still flying them, with the fixed floats, just like in John Eacott's photograph in 1978/79. The big advantage was that if the weather got very bad in rainy season you could land on one of the canals, put the spike in on the bank and shut down if need be until the rain cleared. They made the Wessex look very modern there too. I seem to remember we had a problem which resulted in them being flown in manual throttle the whole time.

SAS,
Jack never wore a tweed jacket! He wore a multi-purpose No. 4 tweed garment - for work, for winter (buttons done up!), for summer (unbuttoned) and quite frequently for sleeping after a few too many pints of ale :).

mtoroshanga,
One of the pockets was for his polos and the other for the petty cash and his fags (because of course, the petty cash accounts were always kept on the backing paper from the foil inside his fag packets and the cash inside a used fag packet so it didn't 'go astray lad'). I remember doing his line check in a 58T one time and when I switched off the Decca he never did manage to get it sorted out again (Oh heck, I can't see them Decometers without me specs and I seem to have left them behind today!), but we still got back to Aberdeen, on ETA with no problem :}

Sogs ol' Man,

Do you know anyone who has done the Decca approach into Sumbrugh in an S-58T in the dark while single pilot?

If you do.....he deserves a whole lot of credit....but must have been an Octopus armed genius!

What ever happened to "Sword Stick"? Seems he ferried a Whirlwind to Nigeria and then later took it to Egypt or some such place. That was back in the compass and map era of helicopter flying.

Gerry was the QHI at Middle Wallop who foolishly sent me on my first helicopter solo! That was way back in January 1979, in a Bell 47G-4A, reg G-AXKW. Before my fisrt flight with him, I was told that he only carried two chinagraph pencils: a brown and a red. If a student warranted a 'green' he would borrow one from another instructor! Talk about cr*pping oneself!!

Last saw Gerry in Unst in March/April 1989, when he was flying the Bristow S61N to the Ninian field.
Anyone know where he is now?

bondu :)

DANAC was supposed to make life easier: unless you had a slippage which went unnoticed until Sumburgh appeared in a gap in the clouds when you were calling 30 miles out :ouch:
