Looks like the big thingy Navigators used during pressure pattern flying...and yes I've done this and it was always just a slight mystery...best left to the professional Navigator.

It's a Rodoniscope :8
A type of circular slide rule named after its inventor, Sydney Flight Checking Officer Norman Rodoni (http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/Norm%20Rodoni%20biog.htm). The Rodoniscope was used to calculate the longitudinal separation of aircraft flying on the same air route.
Read all about it, here. (http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/EN%20ACC%201946%20Rodoniscope.htm) :ok:

John Eacott is correct:ok: Well done!:D The photo was taken in 1946 in Essondon (Melbourne ACC) in 1946, showing Peter Allen making calculations on the 'Rodoniscope', a type of circular slide-rule named after its inventor, Norman Rodoni. The 'Rodoniscope' was used to calculate the longitudinal separation of aircraft flying on the same air route. Flight Progress strips and radar replaced the 'Rodoniscope' by 1948.

It's the old boys you know. They're a bit suspicious of strangers.
Ask for me next time and you'll be welcome to a coffee.
