Can anyone tell me whats the difference between a South African CPL/IR to a JAA and FAA licence? If so if you hold an South African CPL/IR can you convert it to a JAA or FAA licence? If so how?

Thanks.

I dont think you would want to waste time and money to obtain an FAA license unless you are planning on flying in the US.
They will give you for free a US Private license based on your foriegn license. You then have to go through all the crap to obtain a commercial. I helped a South African friend do it last year from SA Helicopter Commercial to US Helicopter Commercial and was lucky enough to save him a ton of money. If you need more info and are interested, email me and I can put you in touch with my friend in Pretoria.

And on the JAA front much has been said in rumours and news. Run a search.

The upshot seems to be that in order to plug holes in their immigration laws JAA countries won't validate non JAA licences. You'd have to start from scratch.
