In case you are not succeful in Cancún, why not try to get one in Cozumel, which is the island just off the coast.

Long ago I rented a C-185 with pilot in Cozumel (would not rent it without the pilot going along, despite showing my pilot licence). Was to go for a day visit in Chichen Itza... So the pilot flew us over, and since we got acquainted during the flight, he did let me fly it on the way back.

Nice area by the way, although I hate Cancún (overcrowded) but if you want nice beaches, go to Cozumel, much more civilized resort. If you like "old stones" and pre-Colombian history, also visit Tulum next to Cancún...
