Been wandering around Cottesmores backroads specifically Langham Crossroads towards Ashwell and it looks as if one of HMP's hotels has been built on what appears to be an old airfield. Can anyone throw any light on the subject for me? A quick trawl of the usual historical suspects has failed to bring forth a name. Close enough to Cotty to be an RLG and far enough away to have had a life of its own. Thanks in anticipation

Ashwell is situated 1.5 miles from Oakham in Rutland.

The prison first opened in 1955 as an Open Prison for short to medium term adult male prisoners. The site previously an Army camp extends to about 10 hectares. In October 1987 it was converted to an Adult Male Low Category C establishment.

Ashwell runs an open and free running regime with much commitment to sentence planning, throughcare and purposeful activity. In 2003 Ashwell achieved Resettlement Stage 1 accreditation.

The camp referred to housed elements of the Polish Parachute Brigade prior to their drop at Arnhem. Some of the older inhabitants of the area tell of practice drops in the vicinity of the camp. The area utilised by the army was quite extensive. As the previous poster stated the prison is now built on part of it but it extended as far as the Coop Store on Burley Road. If you go into the Coop car park and look to the right of the store front, in the corner of the site you will see the old camp gymnasium building. This is I believe the last building left from the army camp. Unless anyone knows different?
