William "Sandy" Alexander Smillie Young died at age 107 last week in Joondalup, Perth, Western Australia last week.

A wireless operator with the RFC during the first world war, after having transferred from the infantry, Sandy left the forces and went to Borneo as an industrial chemist. When the Japanese invaded during WW2 Sandy refused to leave and remaind to sabotage the tannin works where he was employed. He was captured by the Japanese and interned until the end of the war.

After the war he settled in Australia and set up a tannin factory in Toodyay in 1948.
