View Full Version : Nigerian Aviation Agencies get World Bank Loan

"DETERIORATING infrastructure affecting the quality of service in Nigeria's aviation sector may soon be a thing of the past as the World Bank has okayed a N59.7b loan to the industry.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Demuren and the Director of Finance, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. John Onifade, were in the United States (U.S) yesterday to secure the loan.
A breakdown of the loan facility shows that the FAAN got the highest amount of $13.06 million followed by the NCAA, which got $9.6 million.
The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) received $8.7 million, while the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) got $7.99 million.
Estimated implementation period of the projects, according to a source in the aviation industry, is between October 2007 and June 2011.
The project development objectives include improving the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) safety standards.
It is also aimed at increasing the CAA's compliance with ICAO's security standards as well as enhances main international airports compliance with ICAO's security standards.
Consequently, FAAN is expected to spend about $1.3 million on construction of crisis management centres in Abuja, Kano, Lagos and Port-Harcourt airports.
Installation of a Central Information Technology (CIT) system at FAAN headquarters is to cost $1 million, while $600,000 would be expended on design of an airport emergency plan in Abuja, Lagos, Kano and Port-Harcourt.
Building of an aircraft remote parking in the event of crisis in the four international airports is to cost $450,000, while $1,100 million is to be spent on purchase of five x-ray machines for freight in the four airports.
Also, 10 fire trucks for the four airports at a cost of $4.70 million will be purchased while $1.26 million would be spent on x-ray machines for passenger luggage in Lagos, Port-Harcourt and Kano.
Electronic badge identification system for airport personnel in Abuja, Lagos, Kano and Port-Harcourt is included in the project at a cost of $700,000.
For the NCAA, the bulk of the funding is to go into institutional study corrective action plan and safety training for safety oversight personnel which will cost $3 million.
Other areas to be financed include installation of central IT system at the headquarters costing $1.2 million and security training for aviation security personnel at $1 million. Also, the NAMA provision for emergency training needs, which would cost $4.8 million followed by upgrade and installation of Satellite Communication (SATCOM) and extension of Very High Frequency (VHF) coverage, which takes $1.8 million.
