The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), has licensed two companies, which will soon offer passenger flights out of Entebbe International
Airport.
They are Air Uganda International, in which Capt. Mike Mukula (MP Soroti Municipality) is said to be the key player and Dairo Air
Services Limited, who have been offering cargo services for several years now.
"Air Uganda International has planned to start its operations with a Boeing 747-400 series which carries 254 passengers plus 60
metric tonnes of cargo and a 120-seater Boeing 737-200 series," said the source told Business Vision Monday.
Other sources say Air Uganda International wet leased (hired with its crew) the B747-400, while the B737-200 was acquired on a dry
lease (hired without its crew).
According to documents submitted to CAA, DAIRO, will use a MacDonald Douglas twin jet DC 9-41 aircraft for its passenger flights.
But its planned routes could not be immediately established yesterday.
Air Uganda International will initially offer regional flights, including South Africa, before proceeding to Dubai and Europe.
"They said this was purely a private initiative by Ugandans who have planned to register the planes locally and turn Entebbe into a
regional hub.
Government is not involved in the venture at all," said the source.
"Since British Airways withdrew its Boeing 777 and replaced it with a Boeing 767 on the Entebbe route, demand for cargo services
has been on the increase. Kenya Airways carries much less cargo while Gulf Air is suspending its operations here," added the
source.
"So with the resumption of fish exports by nine local companies, Entebbe Airport requires more cargo services. Flowers and other
horticultural products, are also being exported en-mass, hence increasing the demand," he said.
The B747-400 with its 60-metric tonne capacity, is expected to ease the problem. Dealers said fish exports are expected to reach
about 1,500 metric tonnes by end of this year.
Private firms that presently offer passenger include Regional Air and Eagle Aviation. </font>
