new to aviation and forum

first thing is i would like to say is hello to all members and visitors in the forum as i am new to here

my question is and any info i am trying to find out is how to get involved in aviation from a beginners point of view for placements and training as a career

i am based in leeds north england and allways been interested in aviation but never had the push to go further with it until now

i am a self employed electricain with a family and 3 children so until now finances have not really allowed me to pursue these ideas, what i am after is some form of career in aviation which hopefully would lead to higher standards but not quite sure which direction to take to achieve my goals.

any help or info would be much appreciated

Hi Raving and welcome to the Pprune.
If it's aviation in general that interests you and not just the flying side of it then there is another forum covering ground careers like maintenance etc.
As a qualified electrician you could consider a career as an avionics technician which would involve maintenance on all the sophisticated electronic equipment on board modern jet aircraft. You would need to be specially certified to work on aircraft and you would have to undergo further training.
I am sure all the major carriers like BA, Virgin etc recruit people like you and then provide the additional training.
If this is the type of career that might interest you then I suggest that you place a further post in the maintenance forum which you will find further down the Forum Home Page.

ah ok thx guys will take a look and yes avionics does interest me and the flying would also but funds wont stretch that far at the moment


i presume by maintenance you mean engineers and technicians section?

hey there! its not like im a pprune veteran but welcome!

you are obviously more experienced than me (both through life & technical) but i too am a 'beginer' in persueing an aviation job! I too am interested in both flying and support of the industry.

I approached this through 5 short placements in the engineering side with 2 national (British Airways & Finnair) and 1 regional (Air botnia - now 'Fin1') airline, non-airline engineering with Westland Helicoptors, and a placment with a Finnair Flight training centre (playing in the A320 and MD83 simulators all week free of charge, what a dream!)!

i then persuaded myself to study Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University, which to this day i regret! the course was terribly painful and there wasnt much time for socialising!

I am now about to embark in a similar field to you being offered a contract as an avionics engineer before i graduated! reading the previous posts has terrified me a lot as i havent study anything electrically orientated and dont really have a clue about it....we only studied things like Flight control systems, root locus design, feedback strategy etc etc..... eek...

However, as for you, i really do sugest you should follow up in looking towards avionics as there is a serious shortage throughout industry at the moment. even the HR at AgustaWestalnd said they hadent receievd many grad applications as they hoped!

As far as the flying side goes, have you considered looking at OAT or CTC? both are really good schemes from ab-initio to FATPL without the need for the dosh upfront!

Hey Raving , Glad you've seen the light and get out of the electrical game. Im a spark too and after ripping up 1 floorboard too many and kneeling on a carpet gripper i decided it was time to try and get a proper job with de planes. Think ill miss the shocks though if i ever do end up in a left hand seat:eek:

dont know what these are as i am a complete noob to this industry and looking for starter pointers


@bluepeeply yeah the job is ok i suppose but dont find it challenging anymore
