Anybody got any recommendations for car hire here? Fell out with Hertz last year over an incident and Avis don't seem to be open at CIA when we arrive, even though it will be around mid-day weekday. I haven't used any other car hire company for years, we are on holiday so need to be careful of costs, would ideally like a compact auto (Focus or similar).

Thanks in advance

Plenty of cost comparison internet sites which will look at many options and give you them in any order you choose. With some, like easycar, you will not be told the actual company until after you paid, but that's the price you pay for being fussy. Italy has something close to a £2000 excess if you ding the car so take out separate insurance to cover that, can cost only a few quid a day on specialist insurers. No idea if they pay out.

I have this cover thru www.insurance4carhire.com. It is £49 a year for Europe for an annual policy or a few euros a day on a per diem basis. I made a claim in their very early days but it was paid after about 3 weeks with no aggro. For car Hire comparison look at www.travelsupermarket.com.
