I'd never seen one in action until now, it seems they really do work. No substitute for keeping a lookout however :}

Does anybody recognize the aircraft type?

So what actually happened?

The pilot got a fright - sh*t himself - and pulled the rip-cord ?!?

Doesn't seem like the other aricraft actually hit him - unless of course the was a glider on the end of a tow rope, about 20 m behind the aircraft you see in the video!

FTDK - based on a few comments I've read on the net, it seems he did hit the glider or cable that was being towed behind the near-miss...at least he was able to walk away from it. I'm betting he might not have been so lucky if the other aircraft had been anything but a glider....

Was up your way a while back....jeeeeesus....how do you fly in that heat????? :bored:

"jeeeeesus....how do you fly in that heat????? "

Climb quickly - delay descent for as long as possible!

Scotty,

Unless you've been there -- and even if you have, actually -- you shouldn't say things like that.

Yeah, that's true Crosshairs, that's true.

But then I watched the clip again and sorry but he's a prize wallah.

I was impressed by his airmanship. He didn't even exclaim "Crikey" or nothing.
I'm sure that I would have had a few choice words to say out loud....

He shut down his engine (or it stopped itself when the cable wrapped around the prop), deployed the chute, and still managed a quick Mayday call. Sure, it wasn't textbook, but he did the right things in the right order at fairly low level.

You shouldn't be so harsh on him.

Unless you have a Really Good Reason...

Do not second-guess the pilot in command.

The pilot in command is ultimately responsible for, and has the ultimate authority as to, the safe operation of his aircraft.

3 unforgivable mistakes
1.) did not maintain situational awareness
2.) Panicked - never, EVER, panic
3.) Pulled shoot too early and did not execute proper emergency procedures

Yes i am a pilot. Yes, I am an instructor"
