The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) proposes to conduct written examinations for Commercial Pilots Licences (CPL) and Airline Transport Pilot Licences (ATPL) during the last week of July 2007.
The roll numbers for the various aspirants was published on the DGCA website on the 18 th of July'07- a week before the exam date.
Much to the surprise and dismay of hundreds of applicants, their names have been omitted from the list of admitted candidates, as according to the DGCA, they had failed to submit attested copies of High School Certificates and the last page of their Flying Log Book along with their application forms as proof of eligibility. ( Where else in the world are these required but in India !!)
This requirement was not specified in the written exam form but was apparently published on the DGCA website much later under the wrong and misleading heading "Special Instructions for Delhi Candidates".
Incidentally, almost all these pilots have already submitted their Computer Numbers in the exam form. The DGCA insists on issuing a personal reference number to all pilots called a Computer Number which is issued only after such documents are verified. The DGCA exam form also requires pilots to mention their postal addresses ,cell phone numbers and email ids, which were clearly not utilized by DGCA to inform candidates of this last minute documentation requirement .In addition, the DGCA charges Rs 500($12) for each subject that a candidate desires to appear for.
Furthermore, all the aggrieved pilots already hold basic flying licences such as a PPL or CPL that have already been issued after fulfilling these two criteria and as such asking them to provide these documents has no meaning.
This "goof up" has not only jeopardized the careers of hundreds of pilots but has also deprived the nation of potentially qualified pilots who are desperately required at this point of time .
It also makes one wonder whether the Indian pilot shortage is artificially being created by Indian DGCA officials who could be palming off a chunk from expat placement firms to fuel domestic demand.

with all the red tape that the Indian DGCA makes people go through , its really not surprising that this has happened , theres a lotta other things that they ask for that nowhere else in the world is a mandatory rule , for example out of the 600 foreigners flying in India today , let the DGCA count how many have actually done Physics and Maths at High School level , but still every indian that comes back with an FAA license who unfortunately was probably a commerce student in the past , still has to go do those 2 papers , yep the FAA certified them to fly , but the DGCA says they cant till they do Physics and Maths , its an embarrasement on the part of our system , cause they way i see it , other countries have institutions that are there to make lives easier , but unfortunately we as indians are sorry to say that its the same attitude as far as any other Govt organisation is concerned , the Indian DGCA just makes our lives more and more miserable ....................

Yeah tell me about it...

There is absolutely no logic behind the Math and Physics requirement imposed by the DGCA. Yes, I do agree that flight training does require sound knowledge of Basic Math and Physics and I'm sure every candidate has completed that in their O levels or Grade 10 or SSLC.:ok: And besides, isint one completing his CPL enough assurance that one is capable of carrying out his duties?:*

It is absolutely ridiculous that one has to sit for a Class 12 Math and Physics exam after doing the whole 9 yard and studying and completing his CPL successfully:ugh:

And I bet, the 12th subjects have almost no relevance to aviation.:= Yes they are good, but if you wanna get into engineering or some other professional field.

DGCA please wake up and help the hundreds of aspiring Pilots in India achieve their dreams and put an end to your foolish and ridiculous requirements. Your requirements are even worse than an average middle class student financing his dreams.:(

God bless India!!
