KAMPALA, Sunday

A DC-10 Cargo Aircraft today crashed into Lake Victoria after over-running the runaway at Entebbe International Airport.

The cargo aircraft which was coming from London crashed at 5.45 am.

However, Mr John Nasasira, Ugandan minister of Works, Housing and Communication said the crew was rescued immediately.

"The crew of seven were immediately rescued by the Marine Section of Civil Aviation Authority's Crash Fire and Rescue Services," said the minister adding that the crew had no serious injuries, though they were rushed to Entebbe Hospital for further medical observation.

No cause of the accident has been established so far. According to eye-witnesses the aircraft was extensively damaged with the front section containing the cockpit breaking off from the main body. The DC 10 Cargo aircraft was being operated by Dairo Air Services.

The aircraft was carrying over 50 tons of cargo and had left London's Gatwick airport directly to Entebbe airport, some 32kms outside the Ugandan capital of Kampala.

Since the plane was registered in the US, Ugandan Civil Aviation Authority has notified the USA Federal Aviation Administration in Washington DC about the accident.

A team of accident investigators has been appointed by the minister of Works, Housing and Communication to determine the cause of the accident. "The team is expected to work in collaboration with United States government officials in the investigation," said the minister.
