With the help of a stick and his shadow they were able to determine their direction.

At night they slept right next to each other and used each other's body heat to keep warm. Then the mosquitoes came. Meanwhile moths laid their eggs at night in his burn wounds. During the day he used the water from elephant dung to clean his wounds. For the next three days the water from elephant dung was also their drinking water. The elephant tracks were their directions.

The determination to stay alive and find help for their three fellow passengers was so strong that they seldom felt tired or hungry.

At one stage they were also aware of a lion following their tracks along those of the elephants.
