View Full Version : Rishworth Aviation / KAL contract confusion

I was just chatting with Rishworth aviation about the KAL contract and the requirements for type rating for captain positions on their widebody fleet of 777/747's.

I have received conflicting information which they haven't cleared up for me yet.

I was hoping maybe some of you here can help me understand this.....

They are saying KAL now does NOT require a type rating for captain positions into the 777/747 fleet. OK.... so I thought I'd apply for it, but only to find out that they apparently want captain experience in a widebody (airline).

Huh??? How can one be a captain of a widebody WITHOUT a type rating???

Anyone clear this up for me?

Thanks

BTW...

The only answer given to me was "That's what their offering". No explanation at all.

Have to say I personally was not impressed with the service I was expecting from Rishworth

I am no fan of Rishworth but the way I read your quote of the requirements is that they want widebody experience but it doesn't have to be on the type you will be flying at KAL.

Eg: If you are currently typed on B763 (wide body) they will accept your application for B77 or B744. If you have only flown A320, B737 etc (narrow body) then you don't meet the requirements.:ok:

The experience has to be as follows:
For the B744 - Any widebody;
For the B777 - B767/B757;
For the A330 - Airbus family;
For the B737NG - B737 family.
All done on the last year period.
And you will have to pay for your type-rating on a Aviation Training Facility.

Same for me here. Did apply for the 747, and 777 captain. I have over 16000 hrs, including 3800 capt L-1011 and currently flying A-310 with over 1600 hrs capt. Also have time on the Fokker 10 (full EFIS). Guess what they are offering??
An interview for an A-330 because I don't have "extensive time" on Boeing type!!! Now from a A-310 to A-330 it can't be more far apart experience wise!!!
Talk about logic!!:ugh:...

I got more than 15000hs, 5000 hs on the B767 (flew the type on the last 18 months) and currently I'm flying A320s (only 500hs) but guess what? CCL is saying I'm eligible to the A330, but not for the B777.
Someone is a little bit lost on this KAL non type-rated offer.

Does anyone have any info on KAL 330 rostering patterns?
According to Rishworh, it is a mix of short, medium and longhaul, but that does not really tell much about lenght and location for nightstops etc.
(My personal motivation for finding a new job is that I am desparate to get away from domestic flying and day trips, and back to the long haul!)

Some of us are motivated to fly because of the flying part, others are motivated by the travelling part, and I belong in the latter mentioned group. I tend to think that long haul pilots and short haul pilots are wired differently; as cats and dogs; or maybe gays and straights (?) We will probably never understand each other, but the there is a need for all of us. Problems tend to occur when you mix these people or groups, and I was stupid not to realize when I accepted to fly short haul to get my first command(!). It is funny how job satisfaction can vanish overnight, is it not?

For all balanced people this should of course come second to the requirent for income and time off!

Don't believe anything Rishworth tells you. Worked with SFO's they got for Royal Brunei and none of them had a good word to say about them. Think JP speak's with forked tonque. Quite a few were badly let down after relocating themselves and their families to Brunei, especially let down by bad management and training in RBA.

I have several very good words for Rishworth. Unfortunately, decorum prevents me from printing any of them!

Rishworth's statement is correct in this case. The A330 flying is a mix of short, medium, and long haul. Seoul-Pusan turns are very common with 4 legs per day. A good friend sends me his roster from time to time. I've seen those 4 leg days quite a bit in his roster. He gets out to Dubai about once every 6 months; Australia on occasion; Europe rarely.

Try looking up the KAL web site and see where the airbus destinations are. Enter a destination and it will tell you which aircraft flys there and on what days, so you get an idea of, maybe, how long you will spend in that town. DUB is one destination and so is HON and BNE. Try it, a bit slow, but try it. I assume they change with the seasons, as with all airlines, but at least you can see where they go right now.

Thanks for inputs TARCS and Typhoon. It seems like there is not much domestic flying on the A330 for the moment, but probably a fairly even mix of daytrips and longer flights with nightstops in Asia and Europe.

Regarding Rishworth's role: Does anyone care to elaborate on what role they play in this. I understand that they get paid by KAL, and then they pay the contract pilot, but in which way do we (contract pilots) relate to them and in what way do we relate to the airline? I have been employed on contract before with an Asian carrier, and that was fairly straight forward and uncomplicated. When employed through Rishworth, how does that work? Will one be employed by them or the airline? If they have a bad reputation, what could or would likely go wrong?
Any inputs are highly appreciated!
