Sorry, bit off topic this.

Can anyone provide good suggestions for a supplier of No1SD hats? Turner & Virr have only 59/60's in stock and it will be about 6 months before they get any new stock. I am looking for something slightly more comfortable than the usual "supplied" equipment!

TIA

I would recommend Herbert Johnson - http://www.herbert-johnson.co.uk/

They may seem a tad pricey but I have had four hats made up by them and are all excellent quality.

Strange but this was clearly a much more difficult quest. Eventually, looking for the bleedin obvious - RAF SD Hat - turned up:

for a Snaith's at about £75.

I always used Bates - www.bates-hats.co.uk.
In Jermyn Street, so not the cheapest, however.

Oblique, ty, I could not find their web address. Although I do not have a Bates I have recently started to wear something like the Burlington. Excellent, hats should come back in.

Keeps my head warm and my neck dry. Can't think why we ever stopped wearing hats.

Bates, always. (it has been more than a few years since retirement, but Bates, yes.)
Disclaimer: no connection to Bates, whatsoever.

Only Bates, no other manufacturer comes near to the style and quality of manufacture.

Surely, as one the men, you have no place buying your own uniform. You are issued with the perfectly adequate SD hat at great expense to Her Majesty and you should continue to wear that. It beggars belief you should have the gall to criticise something the RAF have been good enough to provide you free of charge.

Leave the purchasing of quality headwear to the Officers, there's a good man.
