Is the protrution on the tail of the 773 a warning system for tail strike? How (roughly) does that work and what indications are presented to the crew?

Yes, the 777 has a tail. It also has a tailstrike warning system. A little light comes on up the front on a little screen.

The associated EICAS message has recently been changed to
"PACK YR BAGS" :D

To answer the original question (:rolleyes:), the 773 has a tail skid that is extended for take-off and landing and retracted during flight. It extends and retracts with the landing gear. There is a separate tail strike detection system, consisting of a blade sensor on the aft body of the aircraft. If a tail strike is detected, a TAIL STRIKE caution message will be displayed on the EICAS.
