RNAV Approaches

Hi everyone, I was just wondering with RNAV approaches some IAF fixes have holding patterns and some don't. With the ones that don't, should you still do a sector entryor would you just manouver so as to go straight down the appraoch.

Whilst on the topic are sector entries used that often or do people generally try to avoid them.

In response to your questions:


The holding pattern would only be used if required for traffic or weather, hence the need for only one.
All the IAF have very good capture regions up to 180 degrees so sector entries are often not required unless you are approaching from over head the aerodrome.Hope this helps.

Ahh the trusty RNAV approach. Did one only this afternoon. Thank god for autopilots that can fly them for me, :}.

The Initial Waypoints are all fly by waypoints, so no sector entry required, unless you fall outside of the capture region (detailed in AIP) of the waypoint you're tracking to, which is when you'd normally ask yourself why you're tracking to that waypoint in the first place! Only time's so far I've ever had to do a sector entry or hold at one of these fixes, is during CIR renewals and other training.

Actually, when you do a missed approach off the RNAV, and have to track back for a second or third approach, sometimes some maneuvering is required to get into that sector.

re the Holding.... hold above the 25nm MSA, and you can orbit or do what you want really... so long as you STAY within 25NM, or above the GRID LSALT... and out of the way of traffic!

Likewise I have never flown a GPS sector entry holding pattern in other than initial GPS RNAV Appr training or IR renewals.

Its pretty hard to see why you would not be able to rack it round over one of the lead-in waypoints and make it to the IAF - helps if you slow down though.

I figure the holding published holding pattern is there for you to "park" in if needed while waiting to have another go at the Appr after a miss, or if someone has beat you onto the approach whose *rse you might climb up if you follow them down the Appr.

Just a quick clarification here.....are we talking about RNAV RNP5 approaches..or the PRNAV RNP1 or better approaches?

BTW are the area nav tolerances PANS OPS? or a CASA RNAV/GPS approved procedure?
