Looks like Deutsch Post and LH are getting into business together.
7 new freighters to be based at Leipzeig? Should be interesting
additions to the cargo world.

50/50 Deal. I`d say the Germans have done their homework , after all , LH Cargo was once an owner of DHL Worldwide along with Japan Airlines. It looks as if their accountants and financial advisers can see where profits can be made with the synergies of the combined operations, and shareholder value increased , with Germany still the # 1 exporting country in the world , for now at least. What remains to be seen are the details... 767F`s , 777F`s , #`s , routes , availability of airplanes , maybe older BA 777`s for conversion , what about EAT , DHL Air ? DPWN sure want to put on a big splash on opening day in Leipzig , and rightfully so....I hope it works out and good luck to all involved.

Here is a short translation to the relevant article in "Die Welt", one of the leading newspapers in Germany: DPWN and Lufthansa cargo plan to start a common cargo airline based on a 50/50 share deal. Start date is planned for 2009 and the base of the "newco", the present study name, will be Leipzig. The plan is to by or lease 10 freighters, either 777F or 747-400F, the planned CEO is a manager working for Lufthansa right now. The plan is to operate this new company independently from the DHL-airlines in Europe. One reason cited to set up this new company is cost efficiency compared to Lufthansa Cargo and the DHL-Airlines.
This may very well mean they want to undercut the salaries paid to LH-Cargo and DHL-Pilots:eek:.

Also useful leverage for the ongoing night curfew negotiations between LH Cargo and Fraport. (One of the mediation results was a night flying ban in return for approval of the 3rd parallel runway)

Maybe DHL is trying hard to wrest control of the express market from UPS and FedEx... With the recent deals with Atlas/Polar and LH, and the start of a possible acquisition of AbEx, they may finally get the worldwide route structure they need...

All UK DHL newbies have contract that means Leipzig basing from 2008.

it looks more that they are waiting for the new negotiations between the pilots union and DLH in November and building up a good point for negotiations.
They canīt pay less, since already it is hard to find good pilots and finding 160 pilots to operate a new fleet will not be easy.

They also want to do some changes on the working schemes for pilots and their restperiods. But that can be done with the present T&C easily.

Lufthansa Cargo is hiring already copilots from the free market, since there are no pilots from the own Lufthansa network willing to change over to Cargo widebody.

This will be a hard one for the Newco mpany.

I wonder were the new aircraft should come from. Either scaling down LH Cargo and using MD11 or leasing some B777 from GEC or some other big leasecompany.

What do you think ?

I wouldnīt speculate on a B777 in Leipzig contract in 2008. But if you put so much heavyweights into a hub, you got to get it out of there with smaller units too to the smaller locations.
Thats how hubs work.
I bet the B777 will only fly to ASIA and N.A. and maybe the other DHL hubs (GB).

For you LH guys...

Many years ago your chiefs said the -400 was **** and unafordable, and that in their infinate wisdom, the MD11F was better.... Now what?

Hire more 5Y for the important stuff?

You must be very close to him, when he was saying That.

The MD11 was cheap and this might have been the reason. Remeber LH bought the last 10 produced aircrafts or more ? MD was just dying and selling cheap.
O.K. you can haul another 25tons in the 747, but the fuel flow is 27% higher.
Even I can make that math.

Lets see what they are leasing. I bet 777

Maybe you can, but you don't quite show it...

If the baseline is 75 tons in the MD, "another 25 tons" is 33% more payload. That means the fuel burn per ton-mile is LESS in the 74.

Max Extended ZFW on a 744F gives you about 128T-129T payload (depending on OEW).

Practical fuel considerations reduce that considerably. Even on relatively short-haul routes, fuel for reserves and alternates reduce the max payload to 125T or less. I've never had a load over 125T.
