Holiday Destinations.

Just thought this may be a good place to start - with the frequent flyers.

Has anyone been to Mauritius recently on holiday and can reccomend a decent hotel.

I have heard the East coast is too windy - west side better

Anyone heard of the Maritim hotel ?
i dont do choice to well and there seems to be too many hotels to select from.

Would appreciate any advice Tks, Also have heard this not a good time of year to go as too cold to swim !!!!

Do you really want/need to go to Mauritius??

If not, I would HIGHLY recommend the exquisite CC Blooms Hotel in HKT. Its the business!! Amazing in all aspects.

The best (or, if not, certainly the most expensive) hotel on Mauritius is The Residence (http://www.theresidence.com/mauritius/uk/index.html) - a friend was recently there on honeymoon and was mightily impressed, but you may require a second mortgage! I believe it's closing June/July for renovation.

Was there for ten days this past January/February. Stayed at Le Telfair, on the south west coast and can recommend it highly. The river facing rooms are cheaper and quiter than the sea facing rooms. One jewel of the hotel is the swimming pool which is magnificent.
If you do want to go drive about on the island and intend going to the north part, all roads more or less lead through Port Louis, the capital. It is not really a very prepossessing first city and the traffic jams are absolutely horrendous. It can take as long as two hours to drive from the airport to any of the northern hotels, a fact worth bearing in mind after a long haul flight perhaps? One can helicopter it and you will be able to find out all that sort of information on the internet or indeed, from the above mentioned hotel itself, which has a helipad.
No ideas about the water temperatures but that should be easy enough to research. One always travels with a full length lycra suit which allows one to snorkel for quite long periods of time in cooler water, free from sunburn on the back or the intrusions of jelly fish.

As an afterthought, spend a lot of time in Seychelles, water temperature there is definitely cooler in July/August. If hotels in Mauritius are closing at that time it will probably be because it is the low season. Mauritius is expensive and not exactly the most wondrous island in the world. There are many alternatives, including Phuket, which many people seem to really like.:)
