A few recent news, one from general aviation and one elsewhere...

A certain man from Hong Kong, named Joseph Lau, in his fifties, recently travelled commercial in First Class. A fellow passenger, male, changed into pajamas, so that Joseph saw his underpants. Joseph was shocked, and he observed that there were ladies in first class, too.

Joseph promptly bought 6 (six) private jets, including a Boeing 787!

Does Hong Kong have a Part 125? If yes, Joseph has to hire at least two CPL-s to fly the Dreamliner. If not, then a Dreamliner is under Annex 6 Part II equally with other general aviation planes, like Learjets, so it can presumably be flown by two private pilots provided the captain has 787 type rating on PPL...

Another news: one Mukesh Ambani started building a house in Mumbai which costs £500 millions. It is to be a 173 m tall tower, tall enough for a 60-storey house, but having just 27 storeys because of high ceilings. The house would hold Mukesh, his wife, her children - and 600 servants. Mukesh currently lives in a 14 storey tower, which is far too small and crowded.

What are the functions of 600 servants in a home occupied by a man with one wife and her children?

What does that Mukesh fly? Seeing that he can afford £500 million house, he could certainly afford an A380 at mere £200 millions, but of course none are ready for delivery yet. Second-hand 747-s, however, should be readily available.

But even A380 is far too small. Sure, you can fly an A380 with 600 flight attendants - but most of them would be sitting in coach seats and not doing any attending.

If you had a plane with limited but large available space, like 787 or 747 or 380, and no passengers other than yourself, your wife and her children - how many flight attendants would you carry, and what would you use them for?

Would you try to get a PPL with pilot-in-command rating and type rating for your plane?

This is just a guess, but I would venture that someone who can afford a squadron of 787s can probably afford to hire a few ATPs. I could be wrong.

Well, he is not having a squadron of 787-s. He is having 1 787 and 5 other jets.

How many pilots would he need to fly them all?

Talking about 787, Steven Spielberg is believed to have ordered a $180M VVIP one...

Figure on at least two pilots per airplane.

Why per airplane? He is on one plane at any one time, flown by two pilots...

What happens when they are off duty, on holiday or sick?

Or when the boss wants to fly long haul?

And can you find crew to be type-rated on all the aircraft types?

I'm pretty sure that full airlines operate with at least 5 sets of crew per aircraft.

Full airlines also try to utilize all their planes all the time they are not serviced on ground, while the pilots are limited to 800 hours out of 8760 to 8784.

So, the owner needs 2 pilots, plus relief pilots for holiday, plus spares for sickness and holidays. But since there is just one boss, he would need the same number of pilots irrespective of whether his fleet numbers one, six or sixty...

Why is this thread still here? Surely it belongs in the spotters forum?
