Ladies and Gents

Not sure if this has been done before but couldn't fin d anything on the search

The 10 Downing Street website has a petition on the return of dedicated military hospitals in the UK. It's doing reasonably well but it could do with a bit more support. Closure of the military hospitals was a disaster for Defence and this probably wont achieve much but who knows......

Bounce back to the top for a bit. Thanks to those who have signed, I recognised a few of the usual suspects.:ok:

To the rest, please consider signing.

All, this has been passed onto me, I have searched the site to see if it was already posted, can't find it!

If you are interested please go to the following site. It is a shame we now have to petition those we place in power to do the right thing for service personnel be they serving or non-serving.

Its a petition to get the injured military returning from Iraq and Afghanistan their own hospital for Specialist treatment rather than letting them go into NHS wards and sit in their own mess because they're too busy to look after our troops.

The petition was created by Joseph O'Gorman and reads:
'We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Bring back dedicated military hospitals and provide adequate facilities (non NHS) for members of the Armed Forces who are injured or disabled in the course of their duties.'

This petition raised some discussion within our ex-serving members, a point raised was how many service personnel are coming back miamed and injured? The powers that be give out figures for fatalities, for maimed/injured personnel where are the numbers, hidden in NHS figures?

Thank you Roland Pulfrew for highlighting the way to object to this unconscionable destruction of an essential service. During my time with both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force, health care was something we did not have to worry about. We knew that we, as well as our families, would get the very highest levels of medical treatment, always.
I urge everybody who is eligible to support this petition. The shoddy way our wounded servicemen are being treated in NHS hospitals - even being hounded in their recovery wards by political opportunists - is a national disgrace. Surely this is one area where the Service Chiefs should go in to bat for their troops without worrying about the umpire?

Sign up now. Less than 10,000 e-mails so far is simply not enough.

Keep the faith,

Neppie :ok:

Personally I think the wording should end after "the Armed Forces."

Mods

The expiry date for the Downing Street Petition on Military Hospitals is
6 AUG 07. Could you please make this a "Sticky" until then?

Boiiing to the top. Petition signed, still sort of the first 10,000, so come on folks. Our lads and lasses deserve better than the attitude infected "care" that can be their lot if they find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. They need care in a military hospital from military staff. Of course that costs, so how about some humble largess Gordo?

RNH Haslar was probably the cleanest and most efficient hospital I have ever visited. Even in recent years the standard of care has been excellent although it is no longer just a military hospital. Whilst we clearly do not need a whole host of Military Hospitals, we should have at least a couple.

Speaking to some of the medical fraternity however, you will normally find little enthusiasm for this point of view. The Defence Medical Services, like their staff to work in MDHUs because it gives them a much broader range of skills. Most Service personnel are fit and well and you will not get the cross section of ailments that you get in a normal civilian community. Working in A&E dealing with Friday night stabbings and gunshot wounds, provide key trauma skills that you would just not experience within a military hospital.

Without the support of the majority of the Defence Medical Services, this petition will fail.

Those skills are very easily obtained by detaching staff to the NHS. As a TA grunt I was attached to St Thomas's to get A&E experience for my combat medic qualification. My regular counterparts went to the Bristol RI and the big Brum A&E.

While I was at St T's student nurses from Gt Ormond St were there also, as GSOH has no A&E.

By all means attache the front line medics to the big A&E's for experienece. The military hospitals would be used for the role2? and onwards, the post stabilisation operations and long term rehab that the boys and girls at the front end deserve. In fact I'm surprised that some NHS trusts aren't lobbying for the re-introduction of Mil hospitals as this may give a local NHS a usefull surge capability in times of local mass emergency.

The closure of RNH Haslar (http://www.thenews.co.uk/results2.aspx?SearchType=Normal&PageId=1&SearchText=haslar) was very unpopular with the local community - and the super-hospital at QA (not yet fully open) won't be very accessible to those in Gosport in any event.

Why does anyone think that signing this petition will have any benefit? The Govt quite happliy ignored the 2.5 Million signatures on the Road Pricing petition, something rather more 'vote worthy' than military hospitals. Sad though it is we won't be getting Military Hospitals reinstated.:(

You can't change anything so why try? Bit of a defeatist attitude if you ask me (I know you didn't ;)) Sign the petition. It only takes 30 seconds and you never know...

Many problems with re-opening the old military hospital system.
1. Not enough in numbers required of medical and nursing staff with expertise clinically to open such a unit within the current force structure. Reserve forces are continually being mobilised and individuals 'cherry picked' from reserve units to fill gaps in regular units as they do not have the numbers of staff and at times expertise, for instance A/E and Critical Care.
2. Lack of will on the part of civil serpents and slime ball politicians to provide funds to new build a unit for HM Forces, as a stand alone and more importantly secure unit at, for instance Selly Oak, which would provide access to high level facilities. I agree with Green Flash that it would have to be a secondary level facility concerned with post critical care and rehabilitation of the ill and injured.
3. Not enough senior officers in both the MoD and DMS who are willing to put their pensions on the line to hammer a few desks.
4. Next incumbent of No 10 will try again to slash operational budgets to save money !!!
5. Old system of hospitals did support the local NHS but at present the problem would be moving any none service patient out of a military unit when you need the bed. The maternity unit at PMRAF(H) Halton had a superb maternity unit, all the local mothers tried to use that rather than the local hospital as standards and services were so much better, but they could have been moved out at a moments notice if the beds were required for others uses, and the same went for any other speciality in the hospital, try that today.
6. As an ex PM I would happily to go back as a civvie ( too old and grey to be running around as I used to be) working in an military hospital if there was one near where I live. I suspect that many ex forces nurses would be more than happy to undertake such a commitment as obviously as a full time regular service in HM forces may not be an option, but it would release others to be deployed.
7. This is a thread that will run and run until someone grasps the nettle and makes a decision. That I do not expect any time soon.
Finally to all those who are ill and injured get well soon, and those of us in the NHS, we will always try a little bit harder whenever possible to get you home to your loved ones.
