I flew into Nice recently and flew the Riviera approach to 04L.

The promulgated mda was 2010ft on this approach, however, in the event of a go around the direction was to maintain 2000ft.

I guess I'm missing something?

The procedure is really a cloudbreak procedure form which one flies a visual approach, not a Non-Precision Approach. You won't fly a Riviera approach (or a Salaya for 22) unless the visibility is in excess of 10km and there is no cloud below 3000ft (or is it 2500ft? I can't remember.) so there is no likelihood of not seeing the airfield when you reach 2010ft. The go-around procedure is to cater for breaking off from the visual approach once you have descended below the MDA.
