MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CRASHES CLAIM 13 LIVES...
With pilots flocking in droves into mostly clear blue skies over the
holiday weekend, a series of small-plane crashes left at least 13 people
dead around the country. On Sunday, a Piper Malibu (PA46-310) crashed
into the parking lot of a strip mall shortly after takeoff from
Hawthorne Municipal Airport about 14 miles south of downtown Los
Angeles, Calif., killing all three aboard and prompting a neighborhood-
wide evacuation because of damaged gas and electrical lines.
...IN PRESCOTT TRAINING FLIGHT, OKLAHOMA MIDAIR, AND MORE
A flight instructor and student at Embry-Riddle's Prescott, Ariz.,
campus were killed Saturday when their Cessna 172RG crashed in a
practice area. In Florida, a pilot died Sunday morning after his
ultralight hit a power line and crashed. On Friday, a Eugene, Ore.,
couple died when their F33 Bonanza went down shortly after takeoff from
Columbia Airport in California. In Colorado, a Cessna 210 crashed on
the Continental Divide on Friday, killing the pilot and two pax. Also
on Friday, two men died when their Cessnas collided near the University
of Oklahoma airport. We're used to hearing the holiday-weekend highway
toll, but we hate to add in the airway losses, too. A reminder to all-
- let's be careful up there.
