Cost of GA; Europe compared to the US

This might be a stupid question; but unanswered to someone not living in Europe. Why is the cost of GA (e.g. hiring a C172) about twice as expensive in Europe compared to the US?

The simple answer is the the British government sees fit to try and tax us out of existence as far as fuel goes. That is why so many people train in the states because they can't afford to do it here.
