Merlin Over Hampshire

Hello to you all

While enjoying a pre weekend G & T on my estate this evening I heard the fruity rumble of (I think) a Merlin. The aircraft was southbound over Winchester at maybe 3,000ft, approx 18:15hrs. Myopia, or perhaps the G & T:O , prevents me from describing the single seater further. Any info on who, what, where, etc would be gratefully received.

Would that be the engine or the helicopter? Come to think of it though, the helicopter can hardly be described as having a fruity rumble!
