Aussies to Air NZ CC

A question for those who may know what the recruitment situation is for Australians applying to become cabin crew with Air NZ. A friend of mine applied online and was promptly sent a reply email stating that because he was NOT a permanent resident of New Zealand that they would not be taking his application further.

I was under the impression that Australians and New Zealanders had the right to live and work in each others countries. I know for a fact that there are many NZ passport holders working for Aussie carriers here in Oz. I can't for a minute imagine that this position that Air NZ have maintained could even be legal under NZ or Australian law. If anyone has any knowledge on this point I'd love to know. Thanks!

As an Australian paasport holder/citizen, your friend is entitled to live and work in NZ as long as he/she wishes.

Air NZ have obviously decided to only accept applicants who currently reside in NZ at this stage. If your friend wants to relocate to NZ prior to applying, then their application would be considered.

They could "possibly" use someones contact address if they know someone, but now there s a record of their application, they would probably be best to wait 6 - 12 months to re-apply.

Accepting applicants from residents of the country which the position is based is common place and legal, both in NZ and Australia.

Up till about 15 years ago CER - Closer Economic Relations gave you the previledge of moving between Aust and NZ with out dealing with costly migration checks. Then the Aust Govt got stingy and changed things. Reciprocated by NZ govt.

I made inquiries some years ago on moving to NZ as a had an NZ born grand parent. Answer was no go. Strange because if she had been a limey then I would have been able to get an EU passport and migrated to the UK.

Cannot even blame little Johnny for this one as I think it was Paul Keating that changed things for the worse.

Australians and NZ'ers are still able to live and work in either country.

The changes the Howard Govt introduced meant that NZ citizens relocating to Aus post Feb 26, 2001 will no longer be classed as "permanent residents". They may apply for this after 2 years living here if they wish.

This mainly effects their ability to receive benefits from Govt agencies such as Centrelink and Medicare. For all intensive purposes they are still classed as tax residents and as such are able to work indefinately (all their life if they wish) in Aus without applying for any status.

NZ has not reciprocated this and any Australian relocating to NZ are automatically classed as "Permanent Residents of New Zealand" upon entry.

I received the same letter a couple of years ago when I was flying overseas.

I applied to Air NZ, knowing it would take time and thinking I would get the application process underway before relocating but was informed that they were only considering applicants based in NZ.

As I am a New Zealander, I don't think the issue is that your friend is Australian, rather they just don't live in NZ.

Im Aussie, and I work for AirNZ... Applied while I was living in Australia, in fact had never even set foot in NZ before the interviews. Used my Australian address and yeah... :confused:
Suppose, what Im getting at, is that I dont see what they're (Rob & co) are on about when they send those emails?! AirNZ have always, and will continue to I imagine (untill they exclude trans-tasman rivalries from the discrimination laws), interview and hire Australians, as quite frankly, we're prettier, and far more "Kiwi" than some of them! ;)

Best to clarify - is it an Air New Zealand walk-in day, or a dressed up Zeal320 walk-in day?
