Anybody any decent tips on learning to flying jet warbirds - presumambly in the US (as it is v expensive in the UK and Europe???) - any recommendations and views on the rates that are current, or any other practical issues? Any other planes worth learning in - I have assumed the L39 is a damn good place to start?

Dakota...

A friend of mine is an "examiner" for the LOA you need to go fly the L39 in the states. He can probably hook you up with some training!? He is actually based close to an airport called Sundance airpark where there is a company that imports those things brand new!!! :)

If you're interested drop me an e-mail!

Rgds,

Will :)

Greetings!

There is a company in Mew-Mexico where you can fly Fouga Magister, L-29, L-39, Mig 15 and I believe the prices start at 1500 Dollars per hour.(check it)
They have a site on the internet (warbird?)and advertise in Flying magazine.

I flew the T-33 last X-mas in Houston..
What a blast
getting the LOA(sortof a typerating) for warbirds is around 10000$ if you have no other experience. This price is just an average.

I found this website, thought it might be interesting.

Here's another website, with a lot of information on the L39.

Dak-P Depending on your experience level at PPL, to take on the L-39(or any other jet), will to say the least, be a qantum leap. I am type rated on the L-39(& others)incl. Mig15UTI, but I had experience in "fast jets" as a military pilot. However, if you only want to take a ride-"go for it".

Without wishing to be too much of a killjoy, I'd check that the fast jet you go for a whizz in has a serviceable bang seat - there's no other way of staying alive if it all goes pear shaped. In the UK most (if not all) of the jet warbirds have working seats. Some in the US have not.

Some outfit in South Africa have Lightnings and Buccs. Assuming $1,500 per hour in the US (seems a bit steep to me) then RSA may be a cheaper option?

If I ever get the chance to jump into something pointy, I like the idea of making M 1.0 and then some! Got to be worth the extra cost.

Also an operation in Russia with MIG 29, MIG 21 and even a MIG 25 ride.

If it were me, a working bang seat would certainly be requested....just in case.
