Go to Google earth co-ord 12 49' 32 N 45 01' 47E

Can't see any engines..., so could be the biggest glider ever!!!! Notwithstanding the German efforts during WW2...

...., and a walk down memory lane for all those who had to suffer this shi**y sand-pit - it was normally a 13 month unaccompanied..., or two year tour for unmarried souls..., with 30 days R&R after the first 13 months..., not as active as some of the current sand-pits of today..., but it had it's moments...!!!

An-12 sans engines? Or Il-18 ditto?

If my map reading memory serves me this looks like old Khormaksar and, given Yemen's connections with USSR I'd guess something from there and minus the engines. I think I can see a nacelle on the stbd wing but can't be sure. An old IL18 perhaps? Stands by for mocking laughter!

It's an An-12 - perhaps this one: http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=0226318&WxsIERv=Nagbabi%20Na-12...&Wm=0&WdsYXMg=Fbhgu%20Lrzra%20-%20Nve%20Sbepr&QtODMg=Nqra%20-%20Vagreangvbany%20%28Xubeznxfne%29%20%28NQR%20%2F%20BLNN%29&ERDLTkt=Lrzra&ktODMp=Wnahnel%209%2C%201992&BP=0&WNEb25u=Ebys%20Jnyyare&xsIERvdWdsY=7B-NOZ&MgTUQtODMgKE=Gval%20Nylrzqn-gvgyrf%3B%20dhvgr%20n%20fhecevfr%20sbe%20zr%20gung%20qnl%21&YXMgTUQtODMgKERD=1912&NEb25uZWxs=2002-03-28%2000%3A00%3A00&ODJ9dvCE=&O89Dcjdg=&static=yes&width=1024&height=697&sok=JURER%20%20%28pbhagel%20%3D%20%27Lrzra%27%29%20%20beqre% 20ol%20cubgb_vq%20QRFP&photo_nr=27&prev_id=0226319&next_id=0221899

I put an overlay over it and it fits - without engines - would post it if I could post pictures.

FORGET..., thanks..., never ceases to amaze me how much information is out there ...., if you know where to look!!!

DALLAS..., I wouldn't worry about posting photos..., lots of us can't do it either!!!

Hmmm, only problem is, I got the wrong airport. Far East man myself, Tengah, Butterworth; that sort of thing.

Gengis - "30 days R&R" ???? I wish:mad: 2 years 7 weeks straight, NO R&R, NO anything, really other than sand, humidity, discomfort. Even a request for compassionate return to UK for my Dad's funeral refused because I was "the youngest son" (big brother was in the UK).
Not at all sure how those conditions would go down with today's 19 - 21 year olds. The things which seem to bug the present day military are, no doubt, a matter of irritation and concern but 't'was ever thus - "if you can't take a (bad) joke you shouldn't have joined";) ;) ;)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

Gengis,

Some of us had the pleasure of a free flight to/from Kenya after 13months :)

All the way to Nairobi in an Argosy aka Whistlin' wheelbarrow. Returning by East African Airways Comet 4.

Holiday at 'SilverSands' families camp on the coast near Mombasa.
Quite splendid.

Gengis, How the devil etc etc etc

Good to see you on here not insulting a pointlessly self-important failed FTE cum Test Pilot (emphasis on the cum!!).

I think it's a microlight, I saw a great presentation on its handling qualities at every conference I've ever been to.

Don't forget I'm visiting in May.

Affirmatron.

While taking of Khormaksar, can anyone pin point the officers' mess and the Merryfield Hotel (the one on base)? Also the main dispersal where Vulcans would have been parked. I think it was 12 49.5N 45 01E.

Also Steamer Point and Tarshine (?) beach.

Cornish Jack.....,

What Service were U in? Notwithstanding Comp Case criteria re attending Fathers funeral..., (I know many who had to endure similar comp application dissapointment..., happened a lot out there...), however, you should have received a minimum of 30 days R&R either back to UK or to other climes e.g. Silver Sands resort in Niarobi. Anyone not getting this minimum of R&R would probably have committed Hari Kari...., it was not a nice place..., even worse was up-country at Dhala and Habalain... now that realy was the pits..., Aden commonly known as the Ar$hole of the world..., and Khormaksar being 27 miles up it!!! :yuk:

Microlight AV8R...,

Also had free flight to Kenya..., but in a Shack..., only to divert to Majunga Madagascar due to Ian Smith - Ba$$tard..., declairing UDI and us now having to spend our 3 week leave assisting in securing and pumping Avgas from 50 Gall drums into Shacks..., so that they could fly ship spotting missions to deny oil tankers getting into Rhodesia..., so much for Silver Sands...!!! :* Did get up to Muhurraq for a two month swan which after Khormaksar was sheer bliss....

Affirmatron...,

Do I know U???? You'r NOT visiting ME in May..., I won't be in...!!! := If you think that its a microlight - best get down to Specsavers..., U will get 2 for the price of one...!!! :8

Pontius Navigator...,

OM is at 12 49 26.5N 45 01 51.8E The OM swimming pool (empty) is at 12 49.23.19N 45 01 51.24E

208 Sqn (Hunters) dispersal is at 12 49' 39.77N 45 02' 03.04E

PCD....,

Nice one..., Didn't spot these..., but last time I was there..., there was a scrap B26 which was used by RAF Fire Service for fire and rescue training. :O

Looks like a big oil slick to me...!!!! Must have been a Fat Albert in there that popped a gearbox seal.... :E

My recognition, under the best of circs, was always a bit dodgy! Having been a fighter jock a whole lot of eons (plus, feels like, another century!!) ago, transport a/c were always a mystery to me!

I am given to understand by a friend that this is a Battle of Britain Lancaster, the only one still flying in UK. There is another one in the Oz Museum, I understand.

cheers
