Hello All :}

Just a little advice please?

I have had my Class 1 for about 4 years now, but i am only just contemplating starting the Commercial Training.

My concern is that recently i had a bad reaction to an Indian resulting in upset stomach and an asthma attack. I never went to the Hospital or anything but my doctor has given me an adrenalin injection (epipen) incase it happens again.

How do you think this will affect my Class 1 . I have looked at the JAR-FCL 3 and cannot see how this would be a disqualifying condition.

Does the CAA have access to medical records and if so will they find out.

Obviously, my worry is that i will commit my entire savings to this venture only to have my medical withdrawn.

Any advice??

Thanks Guys

Unfortunately there is no simple answer.

No-one can access your medical records without your permission.

The CAA will probably ask your permission as a condition of processing your application.

It is doubtful they will trawl your records without cause, however you will be asked specific questions about your medical history which you must answer truthfully to the best of your knowledge.

You do not have to confess to conditions which have not been properly investigated and diagnosed. A GP's comment that you may have had a symptom of a possible condition and his handing you a medical remedy in case it happens again, is not a proper investigation and diagnosis. If you were properly investigated by a specialist and a diagnosis made you must confess it if asked.

You do not have to offer information unless asked. Many otherwise suitable people miss out on flying careers by making vague comments about unsubstantiated medical events in their past, or even worse family medical history folklore, which the CAA is then duty-bound to investigate and rule out - which is often difficult, or impossible.

You have the right to see your medical records and to have removed from them any comments that are not factual and substantiated. Often-seen written comments such as "asthma?" are not a diagnosis, merely a reminder to the GP of a yet-unexplained medical event. You should politely and humbly request its removal.

The best approach is to make a friendly request to your GP to review together your medical history to see if anything is recorded which may hinder your application. This happens all the time and GP's are almost invariably sympathetic to this request if approached in the right manner. Be polite not demanding!

Loss of licence for medical reasons is possible at any time for any licence-holder, however clean the previous medical history. We all have to learn to live with that. The correct response is to arrange loss-of-licence insurance immediately you receive one - not to abandon the dream of getting one!

Good luck.
