Hey everyone.
Im an ATCO (but in another part of the UK) I was at my parents house today and at 11.30 a 'formation' of 3 aircraft flew very high level (FL400+?) roughly northish west to southish east (I'd estimate via HON). I couldnt see them clearly because they were so high up but was wondering if you guys had heard anything or know anything. formation military or mil formating on another type?

It could just be me and they may have all been at different levels (although very close levels) and coincidentaly looked as if they were formation due to the same speed
.
Who knows. If its a secret squiril thing, then PM me.

*bear in mind national security when you type any replies people.
thanks. :ok:

*PS. ON A COMPLETELY SEPERATE NOTE. Clearly, I dont get to work Air Force One too often (thank the lord for small mercies) but does it still have a fighter escort? and if so, does that happen for a transatlantic crossing? and if so, how many aircraft does it use? I assume they must have to refuel in flight? at what point do the fighters break off?
NB: I remember for the G8 in Birmingham (1998) AF1 landed at brum, no sign of escort visually or on the radio. Anyway, its late.
Thanks

Hi Brian. I worked Air Force 1 many times during my time at Heathrow and it never had a fighter escort. We had to overshoot it one day and I'm sure we would have notice a fighter escort hurtling past the tower!!

Of course... things may have changed since I retired 4 years ago..

:ok: Thanks HD.

I'd read the fighter escort thing in a number of magazines that have had articles on AF1. It also mentions something about it in a book called "How to be president and what to do when you get there" (please dont judge my reading fodder, I was tired & it was an impulse buy in a moment of self delusion and blinkered hope... lol) :\

Traaaaaaaaaa.

Would have thought with that track they would be just military crossing the airways with LJAO.

Military aircraft flying over the Birmingham area is not an uncommon sight.
