I'm looking to stay near London for a few days although not on duty. Is BP mess still available? If so does anyone have a contact? Thanks.

Being off-duty don't be surprised if you're charged "market rate" for your room (and any meals taken).

Of course don't expect either to get value for money that you may expect from a B&B / hotel. There will be no towels, complimentary shampoo etc, no en-suite facilities and so on.

Yeah, happy with that-RAF club full on the days I'm there.

Be advised that BP Mess is by far the worst I have stayed in - not a reflection on the staff or the main building, which houses the public rooms, but the accommodation has suffered from a total lack of investment and is consequently very shabby and antiquated. Not trying to put you off, but you need to be aware of what you're letting yourself in for! Have you considered Northolt (which has better transport connections into town and is more modern!)?

Maintainer, Thanks for that-did you ever stay in the old Yeovilton mess!! I'll look into Northolt

If you need to be in London rather than near it try The Victory Services Club. It's 200 yards from Marble Arch, up the Edgware Road and second left, 63-79 Seymour Street, 0207-7234474. www.vsc.co.uk. Alternatively see what hotel deals Expedia are doing.

Not wishing to state the obvious, but have you considered the Union Jack Club? Just across the road from Waterloo, few frills but clean serviceable rooms, £38 a night for a single room last time I was there.
