Does anyone know what the rules are that govern whether a route is classed as short or long haul?

I suppose it is a matter of perception rather than rules. Some options that may apply:
Will you be home tonight?
If international, does it require an augmented crew (for US FAA, that would be over 8 hours flight)?
Will you do the same thing tomorrow and the next day, or will you do something completely different?
