Hi all. I am in the process of applying for a J* job, and am after some SERIOUS responses to the following questions please.

I would appreciate if anyone can shed some light on these questions. Thanks in advance:

1. I understand that a pilot from VB received a taxation ruling that his/her type endorsement was tax deductable. Have any J* pilots received a favourable ruling?

2. After the initial type rating (paid for privately) does J* pay for others, ie, if you have an Airbus rating and want to fly 787, who pays?

3. What is the pay for FO and CAPT- I have many rumours but no positive answer.

4. Are the rumours true re having to pay for your own drinks/meals inflight?

5. Do J* pay a "loyalty bonus"? I have heard they pay $6000 for the first three years, is this true?

6. What is the average 'turn around time' from application to starting with J* ?

Again, thanks for helping.

Ok, I'll help you out where I can. Expect this thread to become a JQ bagging in no time...

1) Not 100% sure. However I BELIEVE JQ guys have been getting some cash back at tax time.
2) You pay for initial 320 rating. Then you basically get one type change and one upgrade. For example, after the initial rating: A320 F/O - A330 F/O - A330 Command = no charge. A320 F/O - A320 Command - A330/B787 Command = No charge.
3) Righto, base pay for a A320 Captain is $136,860/year. + $161/hour over 75 hours per month. F/O is 60% of the above - $82116/year and $96/hour over 75 per month. As a rough guide, F/O clears between 5 - 6K per month, Captains around 8-9k. Plus extra for working days off etc...
4) You are given a crew meal however it is slop! Most guys bring their own. If you did want to eat off the cart ie pies, pringles etc you would have to pay.
5) No loyalty bonus. That sounds like a DJ thing?
6) From first phone call from JQ to start date seems to be around 4 months. By start date I mean 'course at alteon start date' which is different to JQ start date.

Hope this helps. Now lets wave goodbye to this thread...

Thanks for your reply and posting what the real, actual T&C are at pornstar (unless anyone wants to contradict??).
I have always wondered what the actual figures are so, once again, thanks.

Now if I really wanted to ****stir I'd say "gee, you know, actually these are really pretty good T&C's when you think about it! "but there'd be no fun in that, probably not even get a response.:E

VB do not pay any "loyalty bonus".

Not bagging anyone who works for the Co in question, but I'd like to suggest that $137k for a jet Captain doing 75hrs/month is not great pay by world standards. For widebody, long haul ops it's probably well below the going rate. However, the real question is conditions....
The fact the original poster didn't think to investigate this aspect probably explains why so many people are accepting postions with Jet* from GA/regionals and why so many are moving on again....
Just an opinion, and probably an irrelevant one, as market forces will ultimately dictate what pay and conditions are "really pretty good".

Avid
Somewhat disappointed that you highlighted only certain aspects of my statement regarding T&C's in pornstar, it was a ****stir, I'm sorry (if) you missed that salient point.
The original poster - are you refering to myself or shouldhe?
If shouldhe then I am assuming he does not have command jet time so talking about overseas jet pay is irrelevant to a G/A guy who is looking to moving to an airline F/O position.
If refering to myself then please look at my first sentance.

It would appear shouldhe wants to work, and live, in Australia at present and is assessing his viable options which in the "now" definitions of airlines in Australia means pornstar and VB.
Was it different 5-6 years ago well, yes; but that was 5-6 years ago.
But I didn't mention Qantas. Is Qantas still a realistic option? Will they be an option if the sale goes through and they too recoup money by going to "buy your rating?" Discuss!

This is a cycle - the "buy an airline" job mentality if not introduced, was certainly championed by the original CP of VB (to his ultimate substantial benefit financially, the change from union man to businessman over the years an interesting sideline) and happily adopted by GD and his offsider (at most generous) AJ and - well, that's how recruiting for First Officers, IN Australia, IS done in 2007.
Right or wrong? Doesn't matter, just is!

The current crop of G/A guys (and existing) First Officers and Captains in the LCC will get experience and then decide where their future's are.
There is no loyalty any more - whether the management of these companies understand this or have any interest in long term consequences is questionable as (in 3-5 years) GD may be dead and buried and the rest will have made SO much money they retire early and simply do not care; leave it for someone else to sort out.

To Shouldhe and all those looking to move up/on- you can only deal with what is available at the time, that is what I did and (I suspect) Avid and hundreds, if not thousands before you.

And to anyone who thinks I approve of the current situation in Australia - you are wrong; but instead of your bitching and moaning please present some viable, sensible, practicle and EFFECTIVE ways of improving things.
I would be pleasantly surprised to find anyone who can - I believe it is a cycle which should (may) improve with time, you reckon you can change things I await to be astounded and please show everybody HOW!

People will deal with what is available to THEM, what was available to someone else years ago and how they got to where they are now is really irrelevant.

Regards to all.

Galdian. Thank you for your post. Excellent.

You are correct, I do want to live and work in Australia, so that means Q, JQ, VB... Q are not hiring at the moment (I've been on hold for 18 months... life has to go on - can't wait forever!) VB are not that attractive any more (to me at least) as it is about an 8 year slog to command.... so that leaves pornstar. IF (I repeat IF) the rumours of command in 5 years or less are true, then economically JQ is the only real option for me. I agree, the T&C are not the greatest by world standards, and I am not endorsing them, but I WANT to live in Aus, and I WANT to fly for an airline that pays more than GA or rejonals, so where does that leave me??? It leaves me accepting the T&C offered. I do have a choice not to join (provided they offer me a spot in the first place!!) but as I said I WANT TO FLY IN AUS.

I thank you for your response and comments made. It is nice to get a answer that is level headed, unbiased and not full of idiological rantings.:ok:

What about Skywest? Still considered an airline, no having to pay for an endorsement, good conditions.

Q are hiring at the end of the year eh? Jeez, I've only heard that on a 6 monthly basis for the last 18 months. Is this from a reliable source or just furph? I guess this is a rumour network!

When you look at that sort of money it isnt too bad for an "Unskilled" worker, tradesmen and engineers earn that sort of money so it isnt that bad, could be better. But i do have to say Train Drivers earn more 160,000 and they arent putting up with ****, but then most of that package is all the benifits for living in the middle of bloody no where.

Whats the DJ and QF comparison salarys?

I personally wouldnt work for JQ untill they had boeings because of the stick on the airbus, could never feel comfortable flying with one hand. Weird or what?:8

No, RDO's are all off at home....you can choose to have RDO's away on a trip, but who would do that?

Not sure where you get the 8 years to command timeframe from I reckon it is closer to 12 - 18 months at the moment

Lots of aeroplanes coming over the next few years according to all reports

Driver,

Is that 12-18 months to command on the new Embraer jet? If so, do you know the pay that guys will be on?

Mr Buzz,
Not sure if you are taking the piss, my post being all about me etc...
I appreciate that a combined front between pilots would help 'the cause' and my post was not meant to undermine that, however, I'm in such a position that if I am unable to get a job in Australia in the location I would like (on the money that is ok), then I will stay with my current employer.
Please don't take this as an attack on you or your post, merely trying to explain that at this point in my life it is all about me (and my family)
Cheers

Shouldhe,

Mate Mr Buzzy often shoots from the hip, and can be hard at times to read between the lines. However, this time it is very clear cut.

How are T&Cs expected to ever improve while people dont care about the money and conditions only because they want whats best for them. And while that may be human nature and (in my opinion understandable), you still have an obligation to uphold the integrity of the industry we are all part of.

Could not agree with your sentiments more, also note your disappointment that the sentiments are (probably?) unattainable because of human nature.
The reality Vs the desire?

Still waiting (with hope) for any takers to what I said in a previous post - totally agree with all the theory of WHAT should happen but can anyone outline a viable, sensible, practical and effective way to MAKE this happen??

Please?? Anyone??

I agree that in the perfect world we could change the T&C's, by not taking a job, however, you have to do what is right for you and your family. I change my mind daily about taking a job (nothing offered yet!) with JQ.

Perhaps, changing it from within is a SLOW but possible way of getting better T&C's???

I too would like to see how we can live (need a job for that) and change things.

Shouldhe

The commands would be on both

The rumours I hear from within say that they are looking for more Boeings as well as the Jungle Jets.

I reckon that if the VB pilots dont screw it up the FO's there will get around 150-180 commands in the next year or two.

BUT there needs to be compromise on both sides for that to happen.

People should not get carried away thinking that the pilots have the upper hand - they do to a certain extent - but push beyond that and things could get very ugly very quickly - the trick is to strike the right balance (and I dont know where that is)

I feel like 89 is happening all over again :ugh:
