I'm hearing reports of a 'bright yellow' lighty going nuts downtown. Any further news?

update: media talking about a possible crash-landing in Lake Waikare, 35 nm south of the CBD

Possibly an aerobatics display for the closing of the Match Racing series (Sailing) that has ended this afternoon down on the harbour.
:ok:

I got a sick feeling when I saw this post. There aren't many yellow aircraft based in Auckland capable of aerobatics. I remember ZK-(E)RNA going down in the Hauraki Gulf (1999 I think) at the start of a round-the-world yacht race. Husband and Wife. I remember almost getting the phone call (the person next to me got it), and later seeing the wreckage, having sat in the aircraft only weeks previously.

If you get the urge to do low level aerobatics, DON'T. Otherwise a PPL student will innocently answer the phone and be asked some akward questions. If you must do low level aerobatics, please have an escape route if you stallspincrashburndie

What exactly do you mean by having an escape route for low level aerobatics?

When performing to an aircrafts' limits, and a limit is exceeded, then there needs to be a pre-thought out reaction to regain full control of the aircraft (e.g. stall = reduce angle of attack and increase power).

If this is done at low level, then the trained reaction needs to be practiced until you know how much height you need to recover, and be able to do it automaticly, because you don't have the luxary of time or height.

In the Red Bull Air Race, all the competitors are trained to recover from different problems - including recovery to the inverted position. Because they have practiced recovering if things go wrong, they have an "escape route".

An ESCAPE ROUTE is simply a pre-thought out action if things do not go as expected - and not flying lower than a recovery needs.

For mattyj's sake - there are two yellow Falco's based at Ardmore - similar model to ZK-RNA. And I saw the five Red Checkers practicing on Saturday between Waiheke and Beachlands while returning from GB and OK. Fun to watch from the air. Sorry I missed seeing you the other day.

Thanks for that advice ECT. I wasn't sure where you were coming from.
What do you fly aerobatics in?

Yep, anything to reduce that drag coefficient to the zero lift AoA.

That might include dumping my Chicken Curry as well :ok:

But did it really go 'Beserk' and 'nuts', and did it really reportedly crash?

Pass-A-Frozo

ooooh.. that's not nice :{Ah yes, you fly one of those, don't you... OK then, the excitement of flying around for hours on end in an Orion with only two props turning... trying to find a dodgy Taiwanese squid boat to photograph...

Have you seen the TV ads trying to convince young folk that the RNZAF is a sensible career choice? Haven't laughed so hard in years... :D:D:D

I haven't seen them, but I hope at least they show some aircraft.
Or is it all beach volleyball, skiing, and socialising?

Years back the Australian Army got in some big time Ad company, who refused to film anyone in DPM's, guns, or people getting aggressive out in the bush. The campaign was more about office workers, with ties on, playing a bit of cricket for PT, and drinking cocktails during socialising....

Some very disillusioned kids received a shock when they started training in the Army.

well given the choice between joining a glorified SAR outfit (with occassional supply drops) and sticking my arm up the rear-end of a cow... I know which one I'd rather be doing :\

hint: as I am not australian, it's the job that involves flying :E

Also, we technically still have a strike force dont we??? I thought the US had blocked the sale... :}

Technically you also need qualified and experienced people to make it a force.

Quite true. If the hangar at Woodbourne (I think) is ever invaded by a foreign nation, they'll get a jolly good scare when confronted by all those gently corroding hulks...

I reckon the young bloke in the ad should be thinking "Screw putting my arm up a cow or joining a barely worthwhile flying club, I'm off to become an internet millionaire and buy my own combat jet!"

When you think about it, we probably have more strike capability in private hands in this country, than what was once an Air Force does...
