Anyone got a METAR for EGCC this pm. Having just removed a goodly sized chunk of my fence from next doors hedge I'd guess that it's "interesting" up there!

Take care.

Yes, here seven miles to the south-west of LHR*, we knew things were getting lively when the BBQ blew away and a big branch came off the giant Wellingtonia tree opposite. Fortunately we're upwind of it. I think we'll delay the stroll up the road to buy the newspaper for a few more hours!

We've just sat at lunchtime and watched six go-arounds on the trot
for MAN Inbounds.
Didn't see the Virgin 74 have another go anyone know where it went?
Watching the TP's have a go was 'interesting' to say the least.
Must have been a fun ride.
There's people who pay good money to go to Alton Towers for that!
Safe flying to everyone up there today, listening first
thing this morning, whilst it was still dark, some of the throttle changes
must have made it fun for the people up front.
Regards
DaveA

Oh, and I'm about to go and try to find the rest of my back garden fence.

Not supprised, it is rather windy. Not a good day to be flying, or indeed driving. I nearly got hit in my car by a slate falling off a roof. Trees uprooted everywhere.

Had a load of GA's at STN too about 1330 today, i think it was six Ryannairs in a row. One managed to force its way down though. Even got congratulated by the tower!

One of our biz jets got down to the holding point and then taxied back, way out of limits for taxiing apparently. We had gusting 58 here which has now gone to a maximum of 50.

Got a Quantas 744 in earlier this morning and just seen a BA land.

There's gonna be a few miffed passengers today!

News on BBC Berkshire ref EGLL recording highest gust at 67knts / 77 mph

15:30 The Met Office has just told us here at BBC Radio Berkshire that Heathrow has recorded one of the strongest gusts in the whole of England this lunchtime. It was 67 notts or 77 mph.

Link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/berkshire/content/articles/2007/01/18/storm_fallentrees_feature.shtml

Is this a new speed / velocity measure we haven't heard about ? :)

Well, the BBC reported a gust of "90mph" at the Needles off the Isle of Wight this morning, so if you are not insisting on metars........................:)

You could always ask HD to convert that into knots:D

At least it's pretty much down he strip! I'd rather have that than it straight across.

I could add stories about Airbus/LHR/strong winds/managed speed/go-arounds etc but can't be bothered .... yawn

Hi, I was curious about this strong wind happending today (Jan 18th I guess not only in Germany but many places in Europe).
The news call it ORKA WIND...
At the begining I thought it was a kind of FOEHN WIND, since the temperature is very warm... but I realise it is not only here happening but also in Norhten Germany as well as other places in Europe...
Can someone give me an explanation why do we have this strong wind today?
Is it because of the strong Pressure Gradient Force??
(As you can see in the chart, a High going on in Spain and Northen Italy and a Low in Scandinavia... with a lot of isobars in between, very steep) could be that?
How often this phenomenon happens?

I appreciate a technical answer

(my first winter living in Europe and I want to familiarize myself with the local weather).

AirGus.-

...And the award for the best take-off of the day...

...Goes to the Paris-bound 146 at EGBB departing from runway 15-33 today, seen by millions on BBC TV National News.

Made more dramatic by the telephoto lens, but I thought they handled it well, and the wings were always level.

...Cracking crosswind limits for the 146, eh Grommit?

Used to work at BHX and I could go and watch the action which could be mesmerising when only 15/33 available and wind was 240/45 gusting >.
Recall one well known local in his DC-9-15 landing 15 with final instant wind of 240/55.
Most were diverting that day:{
Around the undershoot, the view of the inbounds was interesting as you pondered whether any of the airfield was in view from the cockpit;)

I'll find a photo from awhile back later.

There was a cracking clip on the ITV news of what looked like an A320 approaching MAN yesterday. Looks like a good job of keeping on the centreline but the aircraft was rolling like a pig and the wings flapping hard enough not to need the engines!!

Glad everyone made it safely up and down yesterday! :ok:

Any mention of this incident in the national news?

Plane Drama as Gales lash Island (http://www.iomonline.co.im/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=870&ArticleID=1980694)

I presume it is one of the LET410's from Blackpool?

Reminds me of the old Dan Air Nord 262 that also suffered the same problem.
