Phoenix east aviation in USA Florida or Basair in sydney australia?

For what? I had a good time doing my PPL with Basair. I can't comment on Phoenix East.

I would recommend HIGHLY training at Basair, its a long established school, the guy who runs it Darrin taught me my instructor rating back in 1990, he was a great instructor 16 years ago, and I dare say he is still a great instructor running a great school. His knowledge and experience back then, has helped me a lot in my career that has now spanned 5 countries.

Go for the Oz training, it will be much better quality (instructor licensing and training levels are a bit higher in Oz than the USA) than the Florida training, plus you will see busy airspace, mountains, and desert all within 2 hrs flight in a PA28 of Sydney, that ain't going to happen in Florida!

Basair has a great website, have a look at the aircraft and courses there, I fly a corporate jet now, was in JAA training and other charter flying for a while. I just know the guy who runs the show from past experience, and recognize a couple of the people on the staff lists from my time in Oz pre 1997. They only train for the Australian CASA licenses, I think the only school on the southern side of the equator doing JAA training these days is the one in Perth.

I would recommend them for training for a Australian license, but saying that they might not be the match for you, you can only find your flying school from recommendations and then visiting the place yourself, and remember never pay upfront! Look for hidden costs like the fuel surcharges and insurance costs commonly found in USA schools ! There are many many bottom feeders out there unfortunately in the flight school world.

I want to train in sydney because i am an australian citizen but i live in greece.
I want to do the CPL there and then do a JAA ATPL THEORY in europe and the conversion at egnatia aviation...how does this sound?:}

Remember the cardinal rule of becoming a pilot is to get a pilots license first and foremost where you are from, your plan sounds good. But in my experience training in the country where you want to base yourself will work better, ie are a greek /ozzie, if you are living and going to stay in Greece, stick with Greek training from the get go, you will get far more respect from your future employers in Greece, just like if you were to base yourself back in Oz, they will frown upon or even laugh at you turning up on their doorstep after completing your training in Greece and wanting to fly a C210 in Arnhem land on your first jhob.

But its my opinion, from my experience. Its your money, your life so take in all the opinions and experiences of others and make your decision, its your future not mine. Goodluck and no matter what you choose in aviation if your heart is in it and you truly love flying it will always work out!

Hi All,

I am a 24 year old teacher in Canada. Applying for permanent residency to Australia through my spouse. Hoping to be in Australia by July '07.

We're going to be living near Penrith. Basair Aviation at Bankstown airport is the closest flight training centre to me. Just wanted some feedback about their programs there from someone who has done it.

Try getting in contact with the guys at Oxford Aviation (GFS) - Moorabbin. They have a tidy fleet of brand new (2007) cessnas and run the place very much like an airline.

They might quote you a little more than most places at Bankstown for example but IMO, is well worth it if you have the spare $$.

I believe to learn at Oxford Aviation/GFS you need to enrol a course at Swinburne Uni ? You can't just walk in and start flying lessons.
